Sweet Evil (Paperback)

Wendy Higgins’ debut novel Sweet Evil is an exciting new look at angels and demons.  Anna has always known that she is different from other kids.  Her senses are supercharged and she has the unique ability to see and feel people’s emotions.  She always assumed that she was alone with this ability, that is until she meets Kaidan.  Now she is discovering that her heritage is not the typical teen story.  Her father is a fallen angel, or demon, and her mother is an angel.  The fact that she was born from theses two conflicting types of angels is completely unheard of.  Not only is she learning about her parents, but she is also learning that due to her father’s betrayal she is expected to do the work of Lucifer.  Now she has to learn to deal with her ever changing emotions towards Kaidan while she tries to avoid working as a demon.

I was a little skeptical when I started reading this book.  I was afraid that the seven deadly sins theme would be too trite and cheesy, but Higgins did an incredible job with it.  The offspring of the demons are all very interesting characters and even though they each represent a specific sin or vice their characters are developed enough that you want to learn more about them.  There was never a time when I thought they were one dimensional or limited due to their “sin label”.  Higgins did a great job showing Anna as a very naive teen who has to quickly grow-up and learn the harsh realities of life.  I am really excited to see how the story progresses.  I finished the book and immediately had to get book two, Sweet Peril, which luckily was just released.  If you enjoy reading about fallen angels, this would be a great series to read next.

This Lullaby (Paperback)

By Sarah Dessen
$9.99

Sarah Dessen writes amazing young adult novels that often have bigger issues resting right under the surface of the plot.  Her characters are  fabulous and easy to get attached too.  This Lullaby is the story of Remy and her reluctance to fall in love.  She has watched for years as her mother moves from one husband to another and learned that the best way to be in  a relationship is to move on before things become too serious.  And this is exactly how she lives her life.  She goes to parties, hangs out with her girlfriends, and dates boys.  That is until she meets Dexter.  Now all of her dating discipline is being tested and she may not have the ability to avoid love any longer.

Dessen creates characters that are rich with emotion.  They are smart, funny and show how life can make you very vulnerable.  I really liked Remy in this story.  She had to grow up fast and learn how to become the adult in her family, which made her  much stronger and tough.  She quickly learned how to keep her emotions in check but somehow managed to keep wildness in her life.  I really liked how Dessen paralleled the grown-up relationships with young adult relationships.  It was interesting to see the dilemmas of trying to be a grown up when you aren't quite ready.  This was a great book that examines the dynamics of friends and families and all of the emotional landmines that comes with growing up.

Clockwork Prince (Paperback)

By Cassandra Clare

Published: Margaret K. McElderry Books, 3/2013

I am still in love with Cassandra Clare’s Infernal Devices trilogy.  Clockwork Prince is the second book in the series and things are really starting to get exciting.  Charlotte’s authority and abilities are being questioned in regards to running the Institute, creating pressure for finding  Mortmain and Nate.  Tessa is still desperately trying to find out exactly what kind of supernatural creature she is, and now she finds herself fighting her attraction for Will and falling in love with Jem.

Clare has the best steampunk world.  (Steampunk is a genre that focuses on the Victorian era and the craziness of inventions. The genre is typically a mix of fantasy and  alternate history.)  Her world is dark and the robotic automatons are cleverly depicted and frightening.  She has such a gift for creating fabulous atmosphere in her novels.  I am continuously being drawn back to her world.  The characters are amazing.  You can’t help but fall in love with all of them, including Will and his facetious comments.  It is also fun to read about fictitious characters who are passionate about reading.  I really like when Tessa and Will start debating about Dickens or other Victorian authors that they are currently reading. I have to say that my favorite part of her books are the Victorian and Romantic authors’ excerpts.  I love reading Tennyson, Arnold, Coleridge, and many others at the start of the chapters.  It really sets the mood and gets you ready for what is to come.  If you are looking for a new series to read, this would be a great choice.

The Raven Boys (Hardcover)

By Maggie Stiefvater
$18.99
ISBN-13: 9780545424929
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Scholastic Press, 9/2012

Maggie Stiefvater’s newest novel Raven Boys is the start of a new series featuring a psychic’s daughter Blue and a handful of the Aglionby private boarding school  students, commonly known as Raven boys.  Blue herself has no psychic abilities  even though everyone else in her life does.  She has been told that she has the rare gift of supercharging a psychic’s sight, but truthfully finds this to be a dull talent.  Her whole life she has grown up trying to stay away from the Raven boys.  They are nothing but spoiled brats temporarily residing in her small town.  Well, that’s one reason.  The other reason is that for years her mom and her mom’s friends have told her that her first true love will die if she kisses him.  That kind of makes it even more important that she stays away from them, which is fine until she meets Gansey and his posse.   Now she finds herself drawn into his quest to discover a long lost king with all the challenges and heartache that comes along with it.

This was a great book!  I especially loved all of the repeated raven references.  You really can’t get away from that bird, whether it be the boys’ school, their pet, or the missing Welsh king himself, the raven is everywhere.  I thought Stiefvater took a unique approach to her book by giving none of the main characters any magical powers – or at least none that we know.  Instead the focus is looking for a ley line, which holds all of the magical powers.  It was fun and easy to relate to the teens searching for magic instead of learning to use magic.  The characters are charming, developed, and sure to keep getting better as the series progresses.   And how can you not love a book that uses the phrase, “top shelf” in non-joking fashion from a teen character – what a fantastic use of language.  If you are looking for a paranormal book that isn’t the typical vampire or angel theme, then pick-up Maggie Stiefvater’sRaven Boys.  You are sure to like it and want more.

Paper Towns (Paperback)

By John Green
$9.99
ISBN-13: 9780142414934
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Speak, 9/2009

John Green likes his characters to travel. Literally and figuratively.  In The Fault in Our Stars, the main characters travel to Amsterdam.  In An Abundance of Katherines, they take a road trip after graduation.  And here in Paper Towns, they take a road trip to find a friend who may or may not want to be found.  Quentin adored his neighbor Margo Roth Spiegelman.  He put her so high atop that pedestal that it stunned him when she asked him to go along on a night of revenge pranking.  Leaving a note after a hug and a kiss: “I. Will. Miss. Hanging. Out. With. You.”, she disappears.  The search for Margo ensues and Q begins to understand that need to leave and the freedom that goes along with it.  He discovers that Margo is really just a girl.  She is coping like everyone else.  However, through it all she helps him to grow up and to  understand himself through the experiences he undertakes.  He learns to overcome fears and experiences things he would not have tried on his own.  I loved the characters, the writing, the settings…I loved this book.

Just One Day (Hardcover)

Just One Day is Gayle Forman’s newest novel and I  loved this book.  It was such a delightful, although emotional, story.  Allyson’s parents decide to give her a trip to Europe for her graduation present, which sounds incredible until you actual join the tour group.  Now uninspired by her very tight sight-seeing schedule, Allyson is looking forward to going home.  That is until she meets the Dutch Shakespearean actor Willem and impulsively decides to spend her last day in Europe with him in Paris.  Now her path has been altered and she will risk everything to find out what that one day meant for the two of them.

I loved this story.  It was such an enchanting love story that drew me in right from page one and held me to the last word.   We have all been sidetracked in life for love, and Allyson was no exception.  One of the best parts of this story is the couple's day in Paris.  Forman’s descriptions of the city of love were great.  I felt like I was traveling with the happy couple and meeting all of the interesting people myself.  This book had some of the best side characters that I have encountered in awhile.  From the people in France to Allyson’s friends I found them all engaging and life- like.  It was easy to get swept up in the drama when the characters are believable and able to accurately portray a wide range of emotions for the reader to go through.  We have loved all of Forman’s past novels, but Just One Day is even more amazing than the others.  This is a must read for a YA reader looking for a magical love story.  (Jody)

Gayle Forman will also be attending the Tucson Festival of Books this March.  Check back as we get closer to March 9th and 10th to find out what time she will be signing at Mostly Books’ booth.  (Booth numbers 127-130).

Anna Dressed in Blood (Paperback)

What a fantastic ghost story filled with horror, revenge, grief, all mixed in with compassion, friendship, and love.  Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake is the story of a teen boy, Cas, whose sole mission in life is to destroy ghosts who are reeking havoc on people.  His job has him traveling all of the time, making it very difficult to have friends and a normal life.  Of course, other people tend to make his job harder by trying to help, so it really works best that he is alone.  Everything is great until Cas decides to destroy the infamous Anna Dressed in Blood.  For some reason this ghost is different,  in fact this town is different.  Suddenly Cas’ cover stories are being dissected and more people are getting involved in his ghost hunting, making his task even harder.

Blake did such a incredible  job creating the horror atmosphere.  You could really visualize how scary Anna would be with her blood dripping dress and dark veins.  I also thought it was great how Cas kept thinking the house was  alive.  This just made the scenes a little creepier and fun to read.  Blake did a good job of balancing the horror with the humor.  Her characters were constantly lightning the mood with sarcastic comments and off-handed teenager remarks.  I really liked the concept of the book and was happy to read something dark that didn’t involve angels or vampires.  I am looking forward to the sequel, Girl Of Nightmares,  but at the same time I am wondering where the story will go next.

Between (Paperback)

By Jessica Warman
$9.99
ISBN-13: 9780802733863
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Walker Childrens, 8/2012
Other Editions of this Title
Between by Jessica Warman is a chilling ghost tale about one girl’s desire to uncover the truth of her death.  After discovering her own deceased body, Liz sets out to reveal the events that led up to her drowning.  This task has been made even more challenging since the majority of her memories have been suppressed.  With the help of Alex, a classmate who died in a hit and run accident the previous year, the two attempt to access her memories.  The journey proves to be difficult at best as Liz watches herself in her memories.

This novel was incredible!  I loved watching Liz relive her life and slowly uncover the reason for her death. The mystery surrounding the teens’ death was compelling, making it hard to walk away. Warman did a great job of showing the ugly side of being the most popular girl in high school and how one single event can change everything about you.  Her characters were engaging and developed; you both hated the person Liz was and felt compassion for her.  While the ending was predictable it was also very satisfying.  This is one of the best contemporary ghost stories for teens and highly recommended for fans of Jay Asher and Lauren Olivia.

Lost In Time (A Blue Bloods Novel) (Paperback)

By Melissa de la Cruz
$8.99

Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Disney-Hyperion, 7/2012

Lost in Time by Melissa de la Cruz is the sixth book in the Blue Bloods series.  This book is filled with excitement as we travel with Mimi and Oliver into the Underworld and continue searching for the lost gate with Jack and Schuyler.  Both journeys take them to unexpected places and force them to decide what their priorities are.  The book also focuses on Allegra in the late 1980′s before she has forsaken her bond with Charles.  It was great to finally get more of their back-story and learn what when wrong between the two.

I still love de la Cruz’s vampire mythology.  Having the vampires be fallen angels has made this series so unique and fun to read; de la Cruz has truly created a series with layers upon layers.  The characters really seem to be growing up and becoming more compassionate and responsible, especially Mimi who has really come into herself in books 5 and 6.  She was once so shallow and now she has an entire coven to run and perhaps even love in her heart.  I can’t wait for the final conclusion in book 7 (Gates of Paradise) next month (January 15th).  It is sure to be fantastic.

The Evolution of Mara Dyer (Hardcover)

By Michelle Hodkin

Published: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 10/2012

The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin was just as gripping and mesmerizing as the first book in the trilogy.  Mara now knows that Jude is alive and seems to be after her.  This has caused her serious anxiety issues. To make things even harder, Mara is trying to convince her family that she is not crazy and should be allowed to live at home.  The only good thing that has come from this whole ordeal is Noah coming back into her life.  He seems to be the only thing that is keeping her grounded.  As she continues to come to terms with her “gift” and hang on to what is real, Mara discovers that there could be much more to her and Noah’s talents.

I loved this book!  The characters are fantastic and they just keep getting better.  I loved how this book feels incredibly contemporary and then a few pages later it is filled with supernatural elements.  All and all creating a very realistic feeling story.  Hodkin has done such an amazing job of keeping her readers guessing.  Just when you think you have everything figured out, she throws in one more twist.  Of course this also means we are left with a cliffhanger ending that leaves us anxiously awaiting the final volume.  I am completely intrigued with the possible family back-story that was hinted at in this book as well as learning what Mara and Noah’s gifts mean.  This has been one of my all time favorite young adult series.  It has everything you desire in a book; a love story that is well written and witty, suspense and mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat,  and of course  fun paranormal elements.

Masque of the Red Death (Hardcover)

By Bethany Griffin
$17.99
ISBN-13: 9780062107794
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Greenwillow Books, 4/2012
Other Editions of this Title
Bethany Griffin’s debut novel Masque of the Red Death  is an amazing start to a new paranormal series.  Araby lives in a dying world that has been overcome by a plague.  The only way she and the few others remaining have stayed alive is by avoiding human contact and always wearing their masks to filter the air they breath.  To make things worse, her parents barely realize she exists.  Since the death of her brother, Araby’s father has consumed himself with his inventions and her mother just doesn’t really notice her.  But things are changing, Araby’s best friend’s brother has return to the city and has asked her for help.  She has met someone who actually makes her feel a small spark of hope in her world of guilt and despair.

Melissa Marr described this book as “haunting and beautiful”, and I think that is the perfect description for this book.  You can really feel the ghosts that haunt Araby in her voice.  She starts  feeling so much despair in her life that the emotions just resonate with you long after you have put the book down.  However, I am excited to see how Griffin develops Araby.  She has already started to change from someone seeking to escape to someone who wants to fight.  I have a feeling that she is going to emerge from the series as a very strong individual.  Typically I am not a fan of the love triangles that are such a constant in young adult literature, but I am really intrigued by this one.  Griffin has kept us guessing as to which side each of the boys are on, making it a very compelling side story-line.  This is an excellent dark tale with steampunk elements that is sure to win over readers and having them anxiously awaiting book two.

Adrienne Stoltz and Ron Bass’s debut novel Lucid is a riveting tale of two girls who dream of each other’s lives. Sloane is from a small town and is living a very traditional teenage life, with the exception that her best friend passed away a year ago. Her family is very close, even though she doesn’t getting along with her mother. Maggie, on the other hand, is a working teenage actress living in New York City. Her mom tends to be too busy with work to focus on her daughters, so Maggie is often left to raise herself and her little sister. Each night the girls dream about the other girl’s life, down to the very last detail of their day. Neither have felt that this is a problem, in fact they rather like their dream relationship. However, they are starting to question what is real or if there is another explanation for their detailed dreams. What an amazing read. The end of the story was incredibly gripping as the girls start to question their reality. The sweet teen love story quickly turned into a psychological tale that leaves everyone wondering which reality is the true reality. The characters were fantastic. I loved that Sloane and Maggie were so different from each other. It was fun to read about their lives and to get attached to them both. Stoltz and Bass did a great job of showing how the girls’ outlook on their dreaming took on different meanings as they started to grow-up and prepare for the next chapter in their lives. Lucid is such a fresh new story that it instantly became a staff pick.

Maureen Johnson’s novel The Last Little Blue Envelope is such a wonderful conclusion to 13 Little Blue Envelopes.  When we left Ginny on the first book,  her backpack with the final envelope had been stolen and she was left not knowing the end to her aunt’s adventure.  But then out of the blue, she gets a mysterious email from a boy in London who found her backpack with the envelope.  Oliver has agreed to give Ginny  the bag back on the condition that she takes him with her to find the artwork described in the letter and split the profits with him.  Ginny doesn’t love this idea, but she has to finish the adventure and reluctantly agrees to his terms.  She also decides to bring along Keith and his girlfriend, Ellis.  Now the four take off to travel around in search of the three paintings and to finish the adventure that Ginny’s aunt had wanted her to take.

It was so much fun to watch Ginny grow-up and go on another trip.  I also loved that we didn’t get much information on Oliver until the very end of the story.  His back-story was so nicely hidden and then revealed that it just made the end that much better.  This is such a nice series for young teens with the perfect amount of drama, but not overly mature for the younger reader.

The Fault in Our Stars is brilliant young adult novel by John Green. Hazel is not your typical sixteen year old girl. She is dying from thyroid cancer that has now spread to her lungs. Her parents are encouraging her to go out and meet friends and after protesting Hazel finds herself being dropped off at a support group where she meets Augustus. Before long Hazel and Augustus become quite close and decide they must embark on an incredible adventure, even if it could be their last. This was an amazing read. Green has a nice writing style that is so sophisticated for his genre. It was easy to fall in love with Hazel and Gus who are unique characters. They are incredibly witty and profound as they come to terms with their terminal diseases and the grief they are going to cause. Green did a remarkable job of showing the inner monologue of someone battling cancer. The characters emotions were so realistic that it felt like you were listening to or reading a friend’s diary. You were either laughing out loud or tearing up as you read, so be prepared for a roller coaster of emotions that will have you completely engaged with the book. This is a young adult novel, but any adult would find this book to be a great read and perfect for your next book club.

Marie Lu’s novel Legend is a captivating debut that will grab your attention and not let go till the very end. June is the Republic’s prodigy child, even if she is a bit willful and independent. Day is the Republic’s most sought after criminal, not the most dangerous but definitely the most problematic. When June learns that Day killed her brother her only emotions are anger and the desire for revenge. Thus begins the hunt for Day, but what June doesn’t expect is what she learns from him about her beloved Republic. This was a fantastic young adult dystopian read, and frankly the closest book that I have found to The Hunger Games. I thought Lu’s writing style of telling the story from both characters’ point of view to be an excellent way to grab the readers attention and to have you cheering for both of the characters. Her style also ensured that her story was rich with details since you are leaning about things from multiple perspectives. Lu captured the military mind so well with her writings about June and likewise the street smarts when writing about Day. You couldn’t help but think these two are a nice balance and could make an excellent team. The characters were both well developed and it was easy to tell who was speaking, even had Lu not changed the color of her text between them. The writing is wonderful but so is the story. We are just beginning to learn about the flawed Republic at the end of the book and I am anxiously awaiting Prodigy (book two due out in January 2013) to find out where the story goes. I think the corruption is going to be much worse than we initially anticipate. Legend is a compelling beginning to what is sure to be an amazing series.

Ransom Rigg’s debut novel Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children is a stunning beginning to an exciting new series. Jacob had always been close to his grandfather and after he died Jacob discovered some very unusual old photos of his grandfather’s past friends. The photos, along with a letter that his grandfather left him, made Jacob decide he had to go to the small island off the coast of Wales and look into his grandfather’s past. Once on the island, Jacob discovers he has a gift, much like his grandfather had, of being able to see monsters. Now it is up to Jacob to figure out how to save his new group of friends from these monsters that only he can see. This was such an exciting read. The entire story had an air of mystery surrounding it and I was unable to stop reading. I loved learning about all of the children and their special gifts. Riggs included old photographs of the children that added such a haunting atmosphere to the novel. I am already anxiously awaiting book two to see how the adventure continues.

Dan Wells’ teen science fiction novel Partials is a gripping post-apocalyptic tale. Kira is part of the last of civilization. Her parents’ generation built robots to end the Isolation wars, but the robots decided to turn on the humans shortly after the war ended. A deadly virus was released and all but a small number of humans perished. There has been peace from the Partials, so referred to since they are half machine and half human, but growing tension among the humans is still causing trouble. Even more upsetting, is the fact that the remaining people are unable to have surviving children. All babies born since the virus was released die within a few days since they are not immune to the disease. Kira is determined to find a cure. She knows that her species’ only hope for survival is finding a way to have children, and hopefully that will also end the violent disputes within the humans’ society. Thus she embarks on a crazy mission to cross into the Partials’ territory and find a way to cure the virus. What a great science fiction story (and I typically don’t enjoy robot related books). Wells did an incredible job describing the New York city area after the destruction. It was so easy to envision the streets with rusted out cars and the like. His characters were courageous and independent thinking. I loved watching Kira stand up to the senators and doctors even though they are shooting her ideas down since she is a “plague baby” (too young to remember the Isolation war and the Partial attack). She has such a strong understanding of her convictions even though she is only 16. It was refreshing to read a young adult novel where the main character knows exactly what she wants to accomplish. Don’t get me wrong, there is still plenty of coming of age and discovering her true self as the story continues for Kira. And I am sure book two will be filled with even more opportunities for Kira to grow and learn. If you are looking for an action filled story that isn’t your typical teen read, grab Partials, you won’t be disappointed. As a side note, I get to meet Dan Wells next week at the BEA-so excited! I hope I can get an autographed copy! Join me on Facebook June 15th where I will begin our teen discussion on this novel. Be sure to friend MostlyBooks TeenForum to join the fun.

Becca Fitzpatrick’s novel Hush, Hush is a fabulous teen paranormal read. Nora’s life finally seems to be going back to normal now that a year has past since her father’s death. But things take an unusual turn the instant her biology teacher enforces a new seating chart that puts her and the new kid Patch together. Now it seems as if Patch is everywhere and Nora isn’t sure if she should be scared of him or not. As if her life isn’t complicated enough, Elliot, a new transfer student, is aggressively pursuing Nora for dates, her best friend is attacked, and she is having weird hallucinations. Hush, Hush has a fun psychological twist that make the story so fascinating and compelling to read. As mysterious things begin to happen to Nora, I found myself struggling to decided if she is hallucinating the events or if someone is causing them. I also loved that Fitzpatrick never really lets you become comfortable with Patch. She did such a great job of displaying Nora’s conflicting emotions that it was easy to feel mistrust towards Patch. The angel mythology that Fitzpatrick creates is fresh and exciting, making her stand apart from all of the other author’s writing in this genre. This is a great series to start your summer reading. On a side note, I am so excited to meet Becca Fitzpatrick at the 2012 Book Expo next week!

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan is incredibly gripping tale of life among the Unconsecrated, or zombies. Mary has grown up surround by the undead for her entire life with only a fence separating her and her village from certain death. Life is all about listening to the Sisterhood and Guardians, who are the keepers of their knowledge and protectors. After her mother and father returned as the undead, Mary is forced to join the Sisterhood and now she is learning that perhaps there is life outside of the fence, maybe a life without the Unconsecrated. Things quickly go from bad to worse for Mary when her village is infiltrated by the undead. Now her dreams of escaping the fence has become a reality and only option for survival. With her brother and friends, Mary runs down the forbidden fenced-in path in hopes of finding the ocean and a world without zombies. What a great horror story filled with tales of first love and growing up. Ryan did such a great job capturing the fear of living with flesh-eating zombies while simultaneously showing the characters as being desensitized from the constant presents of the Unconsecrated. I also like all of the big issues that Mary was forced to work through while fighting her way to freedom. She tried to come to a better understanding of friendship, love, death, and hope. Ryan created a precocious female character who has incredible courage and determination. It was easy to cheer her on in her quest. (Jody)

Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler (also known as Lemony Snicket) was an intriguing read. The story begins with Min giving back all of the items that remind her of her ex-boyfriend Ed shortly after the two break-up. Min also decides to include a letter in the box of items that details the reasons why the two broke up. Thus the entire story is told through Min’s letter to Ed. Handler did a great job of capturing a unique voice through his novel. It was easy to picture a heart-broken girl recounting her tale of love – in all it’s glory and pain. Yes it was the classic star-cross lover story, but Handler made his stand out by having his character tell the tale through a letter. I loved the pictures (illustrated by Maira Kalman) of each individual item that was placed in the box that was being returned. It just gave everything a more dramatic feel, as if I were the one going through the box of items. I was constantly wondering what the significance of each item was. Overall I thought this was a nice contemporary teen fiction read that drew me into the world of the characters.

Specials by Scott Westerfeld is the exciting conclusion to the Uglies trilogy (although there is a extra book in the trilogy that explores life after Tally’s adventure). Tally is turned into the creatures she hates, the specials. She now has the appearance of a cruel beautiful person and has incredible strength to use against the uglies and pretties. However, she’s also still Tally, and knows that something about her isn’t right. After the operation, she finds herself getting more and more angry. She tries to control the monster within her and keep her true-self intact, but it is an ongoing struggle. At the same time, Tally is realizing that she needs to find away to fight back against her corrupt government that is convinced it must keep everyone the same. So, Tally secretly joins up with the Crims in the hopes of making everyone regain their previous minds that they had before they were turned pretty. But things are much more challenging since Tally is supposed to be fighting to keep the corrupt government in charge. A great end to an already exciting trilogy. Westerfeld does a great job with keeping the action and adventure going throughout the series. His characters are strong and defined, and he continues to push them in new directions as the story progresses. This is a great series for anyone looking for a good dystopian read.

Wings by Aprilynne Pike is an enchanting tale of becoming your true self, fighting for your family, and first love. Laurel’s family has decided to embark on an adventure and have moved to a new town to open up a bookstore. Things have definitely changed for Laurel and now she finds herself attending public school. On the upside, she has made friends and her life is starting to return to a routine , until she wakes up with petals coming out of her back and learns that she is a faerie. Needless to say, the semblance of a typical teenage girl is gone, and now Laurel finds herself in a fight to save her dad’s life and the faerie realm. Pike’s fantasy novel was filled with new faerie myths and an engaging plot. I was a bit leery to read a story where faeries are plants, but I found myself really liking this twist. It made Laurel a much more interesting character and it was fun to explore all of her new abilities. If you are at all a faerie fan, than this would be a perfect series to read.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin is an extraordinary read, albeit a hard book to categorize. At first glance it appears to be a contemporary fiction novel for young adults, but as you read the story you discover it has so much more to offer. Sections of the book read like a thriller novel and has your gripping the book in anticipation, the next moment you’re swooning and in love much like Mara, and then the paranormal twist just throws all your previous conceptions out the window. And because Hopkins keeps you guessing about the true reasons behind all of the deaths and Mara’s madness, you find that you stumble across an amazing new series. Mara, after waking up from a coma, finds out that three of her friends were killed in a terrible accident that she herself was in. She was the only one to survive the collapsing of a run-down local asylum building, leaving her alive but emotionally damaged with no recollection of the accident. Her family quickly decides the best way for Mara to cope with her post traumatic stress disorder is to move to Miami. However, Mara knows that the only true way to cope with her grief and new life is to find out what really happened at the asylum. Luckily, she meets a mysterious boy who helps keep her sane, so to speak, and find out the truth about herself. As I have said before, this was a fabulous read. The characters are really well developed for book one in a series. I found Mara to be incredible realistic and easy to relate too. Her interactions with other characters never seemed forced and the dialogue is playful and sophisticated . Mara and Noah have a great love story that was mature for teens, but magical enough to still be first love. Hodkin did a great job making the reader feel all of Mara’s emotion; this is a fantastic debut novel. If you are looking for a book with a great love story, a few thrills, and a little off the beaten path, this would be a great choice.

Megan Miranda debut novel Fracture is an engrossing tale of one girl's back from death experience and the aftermath. She fell into the frozen lake and remained underwater for eleven minutes, shutting down her body, heart and brain. As she worked through her recovery, Delaney tries to get back to her normal routine, but deep down she knows that things are not the same. She feels different, almost like she is being pulled apart by some unknown force. To make things worse for Delaney, she finds herself surround with death. Miranda does a great job of portraying the emotions that her family and friends go through while Delaney is in a coma and recovering. I liked that Miranda really focused on the emotional strain that everyone went through, and how no one was really able to go back to their old life. The added bit of a mystery as to why Delaney is acting the way she does was so much fun. You have your own suspicions as to why she is roaming around town and then Miranda gives you little pieces of information to push you along, making for a rather compulsive read towards the end. If you are a fan of Gayle Forman or Lauren Oliver, you are sure to enjoy Fracture. (This book was also loved by the staff here at Mostly Books.)

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare is a riveting Victorian paranormal tale. This series is a prequel to Clare’s Mortal Instrument series, but really each one stands perfectly well as it’s own series. (You don’t have to read one in order to enjoy the other.) This series does introduce new family members or characters that are in the Mortal Instrument series, giving a little taste of the older generations. Tessa has set out for London to be reunited with her brother, but things go terrible wrong when she lands and two ladies greet her at the docks instead of her brother, who in fact has gone missing. What Tessa doesn’t realize, is that she is being kidnapped and forced to learn about her special abilities. Thankfully, Will and Jem stumble upon Tessa and immediately take her back to the Sanctuary for safe keeping. Once there, Tessa meets new people and a whole new world that she must somehow learn to accept, all the while continuing her search for her brother. This was a great beginning to the trilogy (so sad that it is only going to be a trilogy). I love the world that Clare creates. You get a sense of the dark dreariness of London, but also the wonders of the industrial age where new inventions are springing up everyday. I wouldn’t classify this as a steampunk story (no alternate history to speak of), but Clare stills adds the flavor of mythical inventions that we all love in our steampunk fantasies. The characters are incredibly engaging and have great interactions with each other. I find myself laughing at their sarcastic comments to one another and than immediately wondering what they are brooding over. Needless to say, I am really excited to see how Clare continues to develop the characters, specifically Tessa. Clare did a wonderful job of keeping me reading, she never stopped the excitement as the characters continue on their adventures. I cruised through the entire book and quickly got Clockwork Prince to continue the fun.

Uglies by Scott Westernfeld is a thrilling adventure set in the distant, but not too distant, future and one girl’s search for free will. Tally has waited her entire life to become pretty. Once she turns sixteen she will be whisked off to be transformed into a beautiful person, just like everyone else in the world. As she waits around for her real life of endless parties to begin, Tally meets Shay. Unlike Tally, Shay doesn’t want to become pretty. In fact, she has decided to runaway to the legendary village called Smoke and stay an ugly forever. After Shay leaves, Tally decides to focus on becoming a pretty and attempts to forget about Shay. This seems to work for awhile, until Special Circumstances steps in and forces Tally to become a spy and locate Smoke. Now everything has changed and Tally is confronted with unimaginable truths. Westernfeld creates a great adventure story. By the time I got halfway through the book, I was unable to put it down and was really wishing I had the second book in the series. I really liked Tally and found her to be a fun character to follow. She is courageous, if a bit reckless, smart, funny and overall and entertaining. Westernfeld did a great job developing her and making her complex. I am anxious to see where the story goes and how the other characters, as well as Tally, continues to grow.

The Cardturner by Louis Sachar is an excellent young adult read. Alton’s parents are forcing him to drive his old uncle Lester to his bridge games and be his cardturner. His uncle is blind, very sick, and rich, thus making his parents want to get on Lester’s good side and hopefully end up in the will. So now Alton is at every game, and starting to have an interest in learning bridge. As the summer progresses, Alton and his uncle begin to grow very fond of each other and develop a very endearing relationship. Sachar has written such a terrific book. He has great characters that keep you entertained and coming back for more. I loved that you also learned a little bit about bridge; at the end of several chapters, Sachar includes hints on how to play the game. It was a great read and overall a wonderful coming of age story.

Melissa De La Cruz’s enthralling novella Bloody Valentine is exactly what her fans are craving. The novella is broken down into three short stories. The first story examines Oliver and his unique coping methods while Schuyler is in Europe and has no need for her familiar. And, lets face it, we were all wondering how Oliver was going to move forward after being marked by Schuyler. The second story is a back-story of Allegra and Charles. In this tale, we finally learn a little bit more about Schuyler’s human father-yay. And finally, the third part is of Schuyler and Jack’s bonding (or what we would call a wedding), which of course had much more going on than the bonding ceremony since both are still being hunted. It was great to finally fill in a few blanks that the other books hadn’t fully explained. I was a little nervous that I would get bored or just be left with a feeling of things being unresolved with such a brief look at the characters I have come to love, but De La Cruz didn’t disappoint me, and in fact I loved the stories. We also got to meet Freya from De La Cruz’s newest adult novel The Witches of East End. It is so much fun having the two series weave in and out of each other, making it all the more fun to read the new series. This book is a must a read for any Blue Blood fan.

Chosen by P. C. Cast and Kristen Cast is the third book in the House of Night series and the story just keeps getting better. Zoey has just found out that her bestfriend didn’t exactly die like everyone thought. Instead, Stevie Rae has become an “undead dead” vampire creature who is embracing all of the horrible stereotypes of vampires; such as killing any human she encounters (due to her blood craving), burning up in the sun, being unable to enter a building unless invited inside, etc. To make things worst, she has a foul odor wafting around her since, after all, she is dead. Zoey could maybe handle fixing Stevie Rae and keeping her life in order, but then she also has the problem of three boyfriends (one human, one fledgling, and one vampire), and her mentor and surragate mother is the most evil creature she has even encountered. Needless to say, Zoey is having a hard time keeping it all together. The Casts authors have created such a vibrant and full personality in Zoey that I just love to read this series. She is a funny, witty and caring character that instantly draws the reader to her. The dialogue, as well as inner monologues, is entertaining and often quite funny. This series has plenty of paranormal excitement as well as the normal teenage drama to keep you fully engaged and craving the next book.

Mockingjay is the third and final installment of Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Game trilogy and it is just as packed with action and page turning suspense as the past two. A revolution has begun and Katniss is at the center of it, whether she wants to be or not. Peeta has been captured by the capital and forced to go on the air telling those in the rebellion to give up. District 13 does exist and people are flocking there to help with the rebellion. Things are starting to heat up and Katniss has to find a way to push aside all of her feelings and become the Mockingjay. Collins has added in interesting new plot twists as well as keeping her characters growing and changing in the final book. She has introduced us to exciting characters, who for the most part we have loved, and are sad to see the end of the series. Collins’ writing is great. You easily get sucked into the story and the descriptions, allowing you to get transported to a new world. This series would make for an excellent holiday gift for anyone who is 12 or older (including adults who have started reading this for their book clubs).

Not to mention the fact that all previous winners of the Hunger Games are being recalled for another major battle. Katniss and Peeta are thrown back into the deadly battles and new alliances are being made as well as new enemies. Collins has such a gift for keeping her readers glued to her books. She fills her pages with great characters and adventure. Katniss is a strong female character who is learning her full potential, and Collins has done such a great job with fully creating her. Collins has also written an incredible dystopic world that is so detailed and thought-out that it is easy to imagine yourself in this futuristic environment. Filled with non-stop action and suspense that is certain to keep all ages reading till the exciting conclusion in book three. This is a must read.

Lauren Oliver’s novel Before I Fall is a unique look at death and trying to make the right choices in life. Sam is one of the popular girls who has always looked down on others deemed unworthy. She is judgmental and often mean to her classmates, and believes in having a good time. But all of this changes once she dies. Now Sam has been given seven chances to relive her last day to help her understand why she died. Oliver captures the female teen voice perfectly. She shows with brutal honesty how mean girls can be to each other, but she also shows that people can change. Sam grows and learns each time that she relives her last day and becomes almost heroic. And yes, I was really hoping for a different ending to her seventh day. By the end of the novel you’ve gone through so much with Sam that you can’t help but love who she has become. This was a really good teen read.

Cynthia Hand's debut young adult novel Unearthly is a captivating tale of destiny and free will. Clara has known for sometime that she is part angel. Her mother has been preparing her for her vision which will lead her to her destiny; for all angels (full blood or partial) have a vision which they must then follow to the letter. This all seems fun and exciting to Clara, until she finds out that her destiny is in Wyoming and not her home-state of California, making her feel the true pressure of her task. The entire family packs-up and moves in order for Clara to piece together the puzzle of her vision and then make it a reality. Hand did a great job of bring in new character voices and creating a setting that was easy to imagine. I found myself really liking Clara, except in the beginning I thought her relationship with her mom was too picture perfect. Hand has already developed a strong main character in her first book rather than slowing developing the character over several books. As a reader I appreciated seeing Clara start to mature in the first book, it makes her seem more realistic. This novel does have a romance component between Clara and two boys, and I have to confess I was cheering on the underdog to capture her heart. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and all it's quirky characters, and the end left me craving the next book, which to my dismay isn't due out until 2012-hopefully in January as it has been predicted.

How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr was such a touching story of three women who have lost their way in life. Jill’s father recently passed away, leaving her and her mother alone and greatly depressed. Now Jill’s mom has the crazy idea that she wants to adopt a baby, making Jill wonder if she is merely trying to replace a family member. No matter what Jill tells her mother, nothing will sway her from bring the pregnant girl to live with them and adopting the baby. Mandy, the pregnant girl, realizes that she is in no shape to raise a child and can’t stay living with her mom and mom’s boyfriend any longer. Things are just too messed up and confusing at home, so she sets off to Denver to meet Jill and her mother. The story starts out with a very strange email exchange between Mandy and Robin (Jill’s mom) arranging for the adoption. I have to confess, that my initial feeling for all three characters wasn’t good. I thought I was going to hate everyone in the story, but by page four I found that I was hopelessly drawn into the story and realizing the characters had potential. I loved how the three women changed once they were drawn together, especially the two girls. Mandy slowly realizing that it was okay to talk to people and share, and Jill slowly excepting her father’s death and becoming human again. Zarr does such a fabulous job of character development throughout the story, that I was sad to finish the book and want the story to continue. This is a great contemporary fiction novel for teens. If you are looking for a more sophisticated teen drama that is more than just boyfriend/girlfriend angst, this would a perfect novel to read.

Amy Plum’s debut novel Die For Me is wonderful teen paranormal love story. If you are still looking for a follow up to the Twilight saga, this would be a novel(and hopefully series) to read. Kate and Georgia’s parents just died in a car accident, now the girls have decided to move to Paris to live with their grandparents. Kate, especially, is having a hard time working through her grief, and often finds herself alone with a book. Then one day she meets a mysterious and handsome boy, and the world she thought she knew changes forever. Filled with fun new characters to meet, and of course a love story that may or may not workout due to one being a supernatural person. I really enjoyed this novel. I found Kate easy to relate to and entertaining. Even though she is mourning her parents, she isn’t overly whiny or self-absorbed, in fact she is rather logical and cautious. I liked Vincent, but am hoping he becomes more complex as the series progresses. The story gave a unique look at the paranormal world instead of following the vampire, demon, or angel trend, that I found to be refreshing. It is always fun to be introduced to a new supernatural being. Overall, I found this to be an addictive read and can’t wait to see what Plum has in store next.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is an incredible teen read. Clay receives a package of 7 cassette tapes with 13 sides recorded. The package has no return address, but once Clay begins listening to the cassettes he realizes that the person speaking is Hannah, the girl who committed suicide two weeks ago. She goes on to tell her listeners that if they received the cassette tapes, then in some way they were partially responsible for her killing herself. Naturally, Clay believes it was a mistake that he received the package, but he keeps listening to all of the tales of the other 12 people involved to find out if he did do something to hurt Hannah. This is one of the best teen reads I have read this year. It is a haunting tale with such unique voices that will instantly capture your attention and hold it till the last page. As you read the story, you can relate to Clay who both wants to continue listening to the cassette tapes, but is growing more afraid to find out about the “crimes” of his classmates. Asher does such a great job of showing Hannah’s perception of events that to some extend you find yourself understanding why she is so depressed (however, you also find yourself wishing she would have found help from someone); he did such a great job of giving Hannah her voice and making her real. I was amazed at how interesting this book turned out to be since it was based on a single night of listening to cassette, but Asher did a fabulous job and I would highly recommend this book.

Harlan Coben writes his first novel for the young adults. He takes a minor character from his last book, Live Wire, making him the main character in Shelter: A Mickey Bolitar Novel. Fifteen-year-old Mickey Bolitar has gone through a tragedy. His father has died in a car accident. In the aftermath, his mother has turned to drugs and is now in rehab forcing Mickey to move in with his uncle Myron. He is in a new city going to a new school. Ashley is also new to the school. Because of their circumstances, Mickey and Ashley become fast friends. After several weeks Ashley disappears. The mystery begins. Walking to school each day, Mickey passes an old house where an old lady, nicknamed “The Bat Lady,” lives. Who is she? Will we find out? Mickey has made other friends. Spoon is the son of the school janitor. Ema is an overweight goth, dressing in black. Rachel is an attractive girl who is attracted to Mickey, and who seems to be connected to Ashley’s disappearance. There are a few events in Shelter that stretch believability. One is where Spoon’s dad, the school janitor, loans Spoon his keys so they can get into the school after it is closed. The second, near the end of the book, Mickey, Ema, and Rachel are able to enter a go-go dance club through the front door. Three tenth graders are allowed into this club. But both of these are essential to the plot. The plot is compelling. I finished one chapter, and I immediately wanted to know what the next chapter had to say. Shelter is a very good book, and I strongly recommend it for young adult readers who enjoy mysteries. Thanks Howard for you review!

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare is the first book in the Mortal Instruments series. We meet Clary and Simon, who are your typical teenagers and best friends. Their entire lives have been very humdrum, perhaps even dull, until Clary spots a demon being killed by Alec, Isabelle, and Jace. Naturally, Clary is outraged at witnessing a murder, until she watches the body disappear; now things get interesting. Clary learns that her three new companions are Shadowhunters and are sworn to hunt down and kill demons. Her new friends, as well as Simon and herself, soon embark on an adventure to find Clary's mother who has been attacked and taken by a demon. This is a fun action-packed young adult fantasy book. The characters are constantly overcoming one obstacle just to stumble onto another, making this an exciting read. The interactions between characters are entertaining, but I am hoping Clare develops them more as the series progresses. The characters were just starting to grow at the very end of the book. I also like that Clare keeps you on your toes towards the end of the book by adding a fun twist to the plot. It is sure to make the next books even better. If you are looking for a fun new series to start that has more than vampires in it, this would be a great choice.

Jenifer Castle’s debut novel The Beginning of After is a compelling young adult novel about grieving and learning to live after death. One fateful night, Laurel decides to stay home and study her French homework instead of going to get ice cream with her family and neighbors. While she is home, her parents and brother get into a terrible car accident that results in their deaths. Laurel must now come to terms with the deaths of her family and her survivors guilt of not being with them. Castle does a wonderful job of showing all of the emotions that Laurel goes through and creates a believable story. It was interesting to see how all the characters, not just Laurel, changed as the story continued. The topic is depressing, but Castle did such a good job of bring in moments of happiness and the end leaves you feeling satisfied and hopeful. Overall, this was a great story and I look forward to seeing what Castle will have for us next.

Where has this author (science fiction) been all this time? This is a delightful story of a young girl who accidentally bonded with an alien symbiote; their growing friendship and trust; and the troubles she has in trying to mix with other children her age who are either imbued with magic or “normal”. It is fixed in a short span of time and the characters are excellently drawn. Little brother Peter has his good and bad moments as a pest or trusted brother. The aliens we meet are bonded with other symbiotes as well; and are believable. There is reference to bad guys but only glancing, they only come out once in a non violent way. This author is definitely good for more reading; I’m glad she has more for me to enjoy. The younger crowd will enjoy this and there isn’t anything objectionable to the parents.

Allison Courtney Moulton's debut novel Angelfire is an exciting beginning to her new series. Ellie is your typical teenage girl who is dealing with school, college applications, and her social life; until she meets Will. Now she learns that she is the Preliator, the one person who is destine to level the playing field between heaven and hell by killing the reapers who are in Lucifer's army. If that isn't enough to try to cope with, Ellie also learns that she has been doing this for centuries in her past lives, she is just unable to remember her true identity at the moment. I really like Ellie's magical abilities and am excited to see where Moulton takes the character. She is defiantly an amazing warrior and is sure to become even more exciting to read as the series progresses. The angel mythology was interesting to read about and I really enjoyed the flashbacks that Ellie had of her previous lives. It was fun to learn how she became the person she is now. My only complaint for this novel is that some parts felt a bit drawn out and would have flowed better with more action. Moulton had great fight scenes, but there seemed to be too much time in-between battles. I am hoping that the next book will focus more on the story and less on Ellie and Will getting reacquainted. That being said, I still found myself unable to walk away from this book and I did enjoy the story.

Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer is an incredible young adult science fiction read. Miranda has to learn to exist in a world where mother nature has become violent after a meteor hits the moon causing it to move closer to earth. Supplies are limited after earthquakes and tsunamis begin to destroy civilization, and an arctic winter has settled in. Living in this new environment is becoming much more challenging. This is the kind of book that will really get you thinking about how you would survive if this were to happen; the whole premise of the story seems very plausible. Pfeffer does a great job of keeping you glued to the book with her characters and the events that they must endure. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself running out to pick up the second book to see how the story continues.

Blue Bloods by Melissa de La Cruz is a highly addictive teen fantasy read. Schuyler Van Alen is your typical teen outcast who is struggling to find her place in an incredible uppity private school in Manhattan. Her family was once the most powerful and influential families in New York City, but now all that remains from the fortune is the family name. Things suddenly start to change when Jack Force, the most popular boy in school, starts to talk to her and she gets an invitation to the most prestigious group in Manhattan. Oh, and lets not forget about her classmate that mysteriously dies and the fact that all of the socialites of Manhattan are vampires. I thought de La Cruz did an excellent job on her vampire mythology. She made the “creatures of the night” much more complex then other novels have and really captivates the reader with their history. It was such a refreshing twists that she is sure to standout in the genre. The historical information about the settlers on Plymouth Rock was also interesting to read and gave the book just one more level of depth. I loved that de La Cruz mixed her writing format up by including letters from the settlers into her story. It was such a great way to keep readers engaged. I enjoyed Schuyler’s character; sure she is a teenage girl, but she isn’t whiny or overly self-involved. Instead, she is independent, resourceful, and driven to find the truth. Needless to say, as soon as I finished the first book I was rushing out to get the second so I could find out what happens.

Charles de Lint once again shows us that the world is indeed a magical place in his latest young adult novel, The Painted Boy. This is a story about a young Chinese boy whose destiny is to become the next dragon in the Yellow Dragon clan. He has been training for several years with his grandmother, but is still confused as to what the dragon is and his purpose. Jay knows that the dragons have protected the Chinese emperors for years, but now they have no one specific to protect and he must find his own cause. Jay’s grandmother decides that Jay must travel and find his way, so she has him randomly point to a location on a map. This act takes him to a small town in southern Arizona that is being over run with gangs and drugs. It doesn’t take long for Jay to realize that this is where his protection as the dragon is most needed. This book was so much fun to read. Jay encounters so many different types of characters, both magical and “normal”, to keep you completely absorbed in the story. His own magical journey from average boy who is worried about girls, to a true yellow dragon with the responsibility to protect an entire town was great. However, I found myself routing for Jay to have some normalcy in his young adult life and not just the magic of the dragon. This internal battle was so well portrayed throughout the novel. De Lint does a fabulous job of showing the wonder and beauty of the desert. I found myself wanting to go out for hike and look at the desert with a new perspective. If you are looking to find magic in your ordinary world, read a De Lint novel. He captures the urban magical world perfectly, just remember to “look sideways”.

Love You Hate You Miss You by Elizabeth Scott is a wonderfully written young adult novel that examines some of the social and emotional issues that kids are facing today. Amy has spent the summer in rehab overcoming her issues with alcohol as well as the death of her best friend. Now she is headed back to school alone and with everyone staring at her. She knows she will never fit in and make friends, so she decides to write letters to her deceased friend. As her letters continue, Amy finds that the past may not have been as rosy pink as she initially remembered, and the future may actually turn out to be okay. Scott does a great job portraying the emotions of grief, anger, and guilt that Amy goes through after her friend dies in a terrible car crash. I especially loved the portions of the story that were letters written to her friend. I found it interesting to see how Amy was working her new life out in letters and trying hard to continue with her old life. The social topics that are brought up in this novel are tough to discuss, but this book is a great start in having a dialog with your teen.

Matched by Ally Condie is a captivating young adult science fiction novel. The year is never disclosed, but it seems like it is in the not too distant future. The use of technology destroyed the previous societies that existed, and now a new government has take control. In this new civilization, people are told exactly how to live their lives, including what job they will have, what they will eat for dinner, and even who they are to marry. Of course, the government had the best interested of the people in mind. In the beginning, they had wanted to ensure that people would have long healthy lives with strong offspring, but along the way free will was taken away. Cassia has just found out that she is to be matched with her best friend Xander. (How perfect is that?) As she is viewing her microcard containing information on her perfect match, another boy's face crosses the screen. Not only is Cassia viewing someone other than her match, but it is another boy that she knows. Naturally, this is very distressing for Cassia, but thankful an Official tells her it is all a big mistake and not to worry. After finding out that there may be another match for her, Cassia begins to question if her government does indeed know what is best for the individual. She also starts to notice the other boy. Before long, Cassia finds herself getting into all kinds of trouble. This is the first book in a new trilogy. I found myself rather enjoying the novel even though I typically don't read science fiction. The story captured my attention quickly, and I found myself compelled to pick the book up whenever I sat down. The characters were interesting and, surprisingly, had little teenager angst that so many young adult books portray these days. Instead, Cassia is a very responsible and focused character who soon finds herself logically questioning the control her society's government has on the general population. The love story was very sweet, but not overly mushy, giving the story enough depth without being overbearing. I am curious to see what happens in the next book, and I am sure there will be more action in the second book since the adventure has just begun. If you enjoyed reading The Giver or Brave New World, this would be a book for you.

Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception by Maggie Stiefvater is a magical tale that is sure to make you wonder about the things that go bump in the night. The story is about an incredibly gifted young girl, whose life turns upside down when a mysterious stranger walks into her life. Dierdre has always had a bit of stage fright when it comes to performing her harp for large groups, but everything changes when she meets Luke, who both calms and inspires her. With Luke's help, Dierdre finds out that she is a much stronger individual than she once thought. However, her puzzling new friend seems to be both hunting and protecting her from evil faeries who want her dead. The prologue sets the entire novel up perfectly with its ominous tone. Stiefvater does a wonderful job circling around and resolving the prologue rather than leaving it forgotten in the main story. This novel has a fantastic faerie world. Stiefvater brings to focus many types of faeries as well as showing the different cultures. I appreciated a darker look at the magical creatures, since in most faerie myths, and especially the Celtic myths that she refers to, they are known as tricksters. However, Stiefvater balances out the dark faeries with her pure heroin, making the tale truly about good and evil. And yes, the teen love story was quite sweet throughout. All and all, I found this to be a wonderful read for anyone interested in faeries or magic.

The best of the three so far, because Paolini gets better and better as the story grows. This story has depth and excitement. We go from one crisis to the next with (just) breathing space in between. Saphira takes a back seat a little this time around, we deal more with the dwarfs, elves, and humans surrounding Eragon during the time of war. The best part is, that it isn't ending here, there will be a 4th book in the series! Riddles are solved from the past three books, including Eragon's parents. Don't miss this one.

I have just started reading the new series, Soul Screamers, by Rachel Vincent. The first book in the series is My Soul To Take, and it was a breath of fresh air from all of the young adult vampire books that are currently out. Instead, this series is about a sixteen year old girl who finds out she is a banshee, or to be more accurate a "bean sidhe" which is Gaelic for "woman of the faeries". Kaylee has been having premonitions of teen girls who are about to die. The worst part is that her visions are coming true, and for some reason she has an urge to scream whenever a premonition occurs. Thankfully, Nash has been able to calm her during the episodes, but more and more girls are dying for no apparent reason. Kaylee knows that she must get to the bottom of this, and while she is trying to save her high school classmates she learns all about her family's secrets. I have to say I did enjoy this book; Vincent created a suspenseful tale that kept me turning the pages until the exciting conclusion. I also like that her banshees worked together in pairs, male and female, in order to save souls. I thought this was a nice addition to the banshee folklore. Now, I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, My Soul to Save.

My co-worker recently finished reading The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyers and really enjoyed it. This novella gives a different perspective of the newborn vampires that Victoria created in the Twilight Saga. For instants, the newborn vampires are completely unaware of the fact that they are going to be used as pawns in Victoria's battle. All Bree knows, is that she needs to stay alive (as much as possible for the undead) and not be noticed in the group. However, she does befriend another newborn, Diego, which helps her to remember that she isn't a complete monster who is only driven by her thirst. The two soon attempt to learn more about their creator, and eventual have to decide which side of the war they will fight for. I was also told that the novella has a good ending even though we know what is going to happen to Bree before we begin the book. My co-worker found it especially interesting when Meyer explained in the introduction how she was unable to forget her character Bree, and eventually had to tell her story. Overall, this was an excellent new perspective to add to the Twilight Saga.

Holly Black's latest novel, White Cat, was just a great read and so different from every other fantasy book right now. I loved that she says on the dedication page, "for all the fictional cats I've killed in other books"; finally, cats will prevail. Well, it should be pretty apparent that a white cat is going to be a main character in this story, but it is also about a boy who, unlike his family, has no magical skills and is therefore not a curse worker. Instead, he is desperately trying to be a "normal" kid. This is rather hard to do since he may have murdered his best friend and his entire family is working for one of the big crime families. Now he must uncover the truth about the day he committed murder and the secrets his family has been keeping. One of my favorite things about this book was the way Cassel describes the cons he is planning, as well as the mistakes he makes during the con. The crime mixed with magic gave this book a unique twist; it was a nice mix of modern world meets imagined world . Black sets a great foundation for her newest series, and I am anxious to see where she takes it. I am hoping we will get more background information on a few of the other characters that were introduced, as well as more magic and more mobster mayhem.

I was finally able to get my hands on a copy of Alice Hoffman's Green Witch, and it was even more wonderful than Green Angel. Green Witch picks up about a year after the end of Green Angel, with Green busily writing down all of the townspeople's life stories. Green decides that she wants to write the stories of the five women who are thought to be witches, and maybe get clues to where a missing friend might be located. During her quest, Green learns of the heartache that others felt after the explosion, and the way people coped with the tragedy. Hoffman, again, perfectly captures the many forms that grief can take, as well as the strength to carry on. What I love about the Green series, is that the characters always find hope and strength with the people around them. Both stories are very inspiring, and I finished each book with an uplifted spirit.

I recently read Green Angel by Alice Hoffman. I found the story to be incredible uplifting and am eager to read the sequel Green Witch. Hoffman has once again created a world with just a hint of magic. The story is about a girl named Green who has a gift for growing plants. Her family and a large portion of the town are tragically killed in an explosion. Green is naturally overcome with guilt and grief. She spirals downward, consumed with her pain. Yet, some how, through it all she finds a way to live again. The characters' reactions to the tragedy are very true to life. I felt that I could relate to the characters' pain and joy. Overall, it was truly a delight to read. This is a great book for young adults and adults alike to enjoy.

I just finished reading P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast's young adult fantasy novel Marked. This is the first book in their House of Night series, and I have to confess I really enjoyed it. I was slightly apprehensive to start this series since it is about vampire boarding school. However, the Casts took a new approach to the vampire genre by including elements of witchcraft. In fact, a large portion of this book revolves around Zoey and her use of the five elements. I thought this was an excellent twist for a vampire book. In my opinion, it gave the vampires a richer background story . I found it fascinating to hear about the goddess Nyx and the rituals the vampires in this story would perform in her honor. (Don't worry, the rituals have been pretty harmless thus far, no human or animal sacrifices have been made. However, the rituals do include the five elements* and pentagrams. ) I found Zoey's stream of conscience entertaining, and yes, I did laugh out loud at times. Overall, I found myself complete absorbed into the story and am eager to read the next book Betrayed. *The five elements are: Earth, Air, Water, Fire, and Spirit
