Iced: A Fever Novel (Hardcover)

By Karen Marie Moning

This is the first Dani O’Malley book, but it seems like a continuation of the Fever series by Moning. That said, you can still enjoy this book without having read the Fever books, but I suggest you do. It makes things so much less complicated. This is definitely NOT a young adult book, even though the main character is a teen aged girl.

Dani is a mouthy, 14 year old girl living in Dublin. Since the walls came down between the human world and that of the Fae, the streets of Dublin are littered with Fae and violence.  Dani has super fast reflexes which help her defend herself against the Unseelie and other Fae (and humans) who are out to destroy her. When a Dublin nightclub gets covered in a deep freeze of ice and frost, Dani finds herself at the mercy of Ryodan, the club’s ruthless, immortal owner. He needs her skills to figure out what’s freezing Fae and humans dead in their tracks. It’s up to Dani to save what’s left of her city before it’s too late.

Despite Dani’s young age, she is quite mature. She has had to be. Growing up in a world where there is death around every corner will do that to a person. And yet she maintains her teenage enthusiasm and point of view throughout the story. There are times when Dani freaks out like a normal teen, especially when she’s angry or stressed.  She has men waiting for her to get older and falling for her wit, beauty and courage. You can see what kind of a woman she will become when she ‘grows up’ and I am looking forward to the next installment.

Serpent's Kiss: A Witches of East End Novel (Hardcover)

Melissa de la Cruz’s second novel in the Witches of East End series, Serpent’s Kiss, is captivating continuation. Joanna and her daughters are finally able to use their magic again, and use it they will. Freya has started playing match maker at the bar with her potions. Ingrid is still helping everyone with their domestic troubles . And Joanna is continuing her games with Tyler. But things are starting to change. Freya’s twin has reappeared and is starting to cast doubt on the true nature of Freya’s fiance Killian. Ingrid is attempting to learn how to date. And Joanna is not only trying to decide how she feels about her estranged husband but is also attempting to help a spirit without invoking her sister’s wrath. Things never seem to stay quiet for long when the Beauchamp family is around.

I thought this was a great sequel to Witches of East End. You really get to know the characters in this book. In the first book the characters were a bit one dimensional but in the second book you start to see multiple aspects of their personalities. I also like the mystery and mythology of the destruction of the bridge. The girls daily lives and ordeals are fun to read, but the mystery really gave the book its drive. And naturally since I am a de la Cruz fan, I love that this book references the Blue Blood series and vice-versa. It is always fun to read the cross over and see how each group (vampire or witch) views the other. Needless to say, the plot thickens in this book and I can’t wait for the next book.Needless to say, the plot thickens is this book and I can’t wait for the next.

Bloodfever: The Fever Series (Mass Market Paperback)

Karen Marie Moning’s second novel in her Fever series, Bloodfever, was filled with intense roller-coaster action. Mac is still trying to get her revenge on her sister’s murderer, as well as trying to save the human world from being encompassed by the Fae world-no easy task. This has come at no small price for Mac. She has had to give up the girl she once was, and embrace the ruthless creature that has been lying dormant inside her, not to mention having to stay in a foreign country that is far from her remaining family. I really liked this book. Mac finally stopped being the pretty-in-pink shallow girl and grew up a bit. In fact I am really excited to see how Moning continues to develop Mac’s character. There was also a lot more action in the book to keep you completely engaged in the story. Every time you thought the story was going to quiet down, Moning reeled you back in with a new twist to the plot. We are also starting to learn more about faeries as well as all of the major players involved in the hunt for the infamous book. Creating a complicated web that Mac is going to have to navigate through. All and all, a fun read that has me excited to start book three.

Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning is an excellent paranormal romance novel that is sure to leave you wanting more. MacKayla, or Mac, thought everything in life was perfect, until she had to identify the brutally murdered body of her sister. Grief stricken and frustrated with the Irish detectives, Mac finds herself leaving the states and flying to Ireland to help track down her sister’s murderer. Mac soon realizes that she led an incredibly sheltered life back home in the south, and things are not always as the appear. It doesn’t take long for her to pair up with an unusual ally who starts to teach her about the world of faeries and how to use her special gifts to track down a missing book. Moning creates a fun new paranormal world while adding in a bit of Irish folklore. Filled with the darker side of the Irish fae and interesting characters, readers are sure to get caught up in this addictive series.

Dead Reckoning, the latest Sookie Stackhouse novel by Charlaine Harris, was just as good as the ones before. Sookie is trying to discover who destroyed Merlotte’s, and all the while is getting wrapped up in Eric and Pam’s plan to kill their vampire master. Harris has such a knack for creating the feel of the south in her books. It is easy as a reader to get caught up in the southern charm. Another great thing about this series, is that the characters just keeping getting more interesting and diverse. Harris does such a great job of making her vampires span the world, giving her readers great character dynamics to follow. This is such a fun series to read, and perfect for lounging by the beach.

Witches of East End is Melissa de La Cruz's first adult paranormal romance novel. Previously, we have known and loved her young adult series such as Blue Bloods and Au Pairs, and now we can continue to love another series. In this novel we meet Joanna and her two daughters Ingrid and Freya. All three are immortal beings with magical gifts who, unfortunately, have been banned from using their talents in the human world. Of course, things are starting to change and the women are growing restless after centuries without their magic. Before long, all three are using their magic in the small town of North Hampton and hoping that the higher-ups don't smite them. Problems arise when a man is murdered and a young girl goes missing. Soon, all of the townspeople are looking at the three women who seem to be helping people but may in fact be witches practicing black magic. Overall I enjoyed this book, especially the last 80 pages when all of the action and plot started to come together. De La Cruz always does an amazing job of leading up to the next book; I always finish her books wanting to know more about the story. Her mythology was a nice twist and I am hoping the other books look at the women's pasts a bit more. Another stregngth of De La Cruz, is her talent to weave the characters' past lives slowly into their current lives. My one complaint is that I wanted more interaction in the beginning between the three characters. Each one went about their own life completely separate from their family members. At times, I felt like I was reading three different books. Towards the end the three women started coming together and I am hopeful that the next book will have them solving problems together, or least have more daily interactions. And needless to say, I do plan to read the next one as soon as she has finished writing it. We were luck enough to get an advance copy of this book while we were at the book expo in May, but don't worry it will be out June 21st-get your pre-order in now.

A Discovery of Witches (Hardcover)

By Deborah Harkness

Deborah Harkness's debut novel A Discovery of Witches is an exciting begin to what is planned to be a trilogy. Diana has always known that she comes from a very magical family. Her mother was a powerful witch and her father was a wizard; magic was bound to be in her blood. However, Diana turns her back on magic when her parents are viciously murdered. Now she has dedicated her life to science and normalcy. Her plan appeared to be working until she requested an enchanted manuscript while researching alchemy. Now witches, vampires and daemons alike are following her every move. Things start to look up when Diana reluctantly agrees to allow Matthew, a vampire, to help her avoid trouble. I found the beginning of the novel to be slow moving as Diana and Matthew became acquainted, but things really start to pick up half way through the novel. In fact, I found it hard to put the book down at that point. The story is filled with fun historical tidbits ( I loved all of the Tudor and Elizabethan comments), action, and of course magic. Harkness seemed to really have fun with her characters at the end of the novel. The interactions between Diana's "people" and Matthew's "people" were fun to read, and more often then not gave the reader a warm family feel. I think the last two books will be faster moving, contain even more magic, and have more fully developed characters. I am looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

Night Huntress (Mass Market Paperback)

This is the fifth book in the Otherworld series, and yes I am still hopeless addicted to this series. In this one, we finally find out more about Delilah and her new "gift" from the Autumn Lord. As always, there is plenty of action, both normal fighting and magical. The best part about this series, is that the characters continue to grow and develop. Galenorn does a great job of keeping things progressing rather than becoming the same thing again and again, and after five books that is impressive. I also like that each book in the series focuses on one sister giving the readers a chance to really get to know each one individually while still continuing the overall story. This is by far my favorite paranormal romance series since you have the best of everything, witch, were, and vampire, all with an attitude and humor.

Rachel Morgan (an earth witch) has been working for the I. S. agency for several years. Her job is to tag, or apprehend, criminal Inderlands and bring them into the agency, but lately she has been feeling under appreciated. She decides it is time to break from her contract and start her own bounty hunter agency. This seems like a perfect plan since her boss would be tickled to see her go, but then things start to go awry when Ivy (a vampire and excellent bounty hunter) and Jenks (a pixie backup agent) decided to join Rachel. Now Rachel has a bounty on her head and the entire I. S. agency after her. The only way to pay off her contract is to bring in the biggest baddest criminal. The story is filled with mishaps and new problems for Rachel to overcome. I loved the relationship between Rachel and her partners, especially between her and Ivy. Harrison did a great job of showing the perils of living with a vampire and how easy it is for mannerisms to be misinterpreted. The book was also filled with action keeping you turning the pages and unable to set it down. This is a great paranormal read and I can't wait to meet Harrison at the festival.

Darkling by Yasmine Galenorn is the third book featuring the D'Artigo sisters.  We finally get the back story of the youngest sister and vampire, Menolly.  There are new vampires killing in Seattle and Menolly will not allow this to continue, but is she ready to face her sire and dark past?  As the series continues I find myself getting more and more sucked in.  Typically, I have to run out and get the next book immediately because I have to know what is happening with the sisters.  This one was a little darker to me than the other two, but that was to be expected based on what I already new about Menolly's past.  It was also interesting to see the world only at night.  In the past two books the girls tended to work non-stop day or night, but since Menolly can only go out at night her progress was a bit slower.  (Don't confuse this with the pace of the book; all three books so far are quick reads due to all of the suspense.)  Once again, a great paranormal series that will cure the witch, shapeshifter, and vampire craving in one book.

Changeling by Yasmine Galenorn is the second book featuring the D'Artigo sisters. This novel focuses on Delilah and the were community. Someone is killing off werepumas in the mountains, and the clan has asked Delilah for help tracking down the murderer. I found this story to be even more addicting than the first book, Witchling. I couldn't set the book down once I started it. The end, of course, leaves you wanting more. This is a great paranormal series. I love that the sisters are so different from each, not only by their talents but also by their personalities.

I just finished reading Yasmine Galenorn's book Witchling and I am already dying to read the next book; Witchling is the first book in the Sister of the Moon series. The series starts out with us meeting three sisters, Camille who is a witch, Delilah who is a werecat, and Menolly who is a vampire. The sisters are all part faerie and part human, which tends to reek havoc on their gifts. The girls have been sent to Earth to protect the world from any violent supernaturals, and especially from any demons. Before long, the girls find out that demons have come to Earth and now they are fighting to save their home-world as well as Earth. I definitely read paranormal books for the magic, and Galenorn didn't let me down. There were several supernatural fights as well as everyday magic use. I also enjoyed the faerie world that Galenorn has created, and I am eager to read more about the Otherworld in the upcoming books. Needless to say, I have already set the next two books aside and can't wait to start them.

One of my co-workers recently started reading Katie MacAlister's Aisling Grey series and is loving it. The first book in the paranormal series is You Slay Me. Aisling learns that she is a Guardian to the Gates of Hell. Not only does she find out about her new career, but she also summons a demon, Jim the Newfoundland dog, who will not go away. And, lets not forget out about her new love interest, Drake. Who, at times is her boyfriend, and at other times her enemy. Needless to say, Aisling has quite a bit to deal with without being a murder suspect. If you are looking for a new paranormal series, give this one a try. It is funny and sexy. My co-worker has been devouring the series and is unable to read anything else until she finishes it. If you prefer reading about vampires, try MacAlister's Dark Ones series. You just know a book is going to be funny when it has titles like, A Girl's Guide to Vampires, and Zen and the Art of Vampires.

I recently finished reading Kelley Armstrong's newest novel, Waking the Witch, and have to say it was a fun book to read. The story was full of witches and other paranormal beings, which always keeps thing a little more interesting. This is the eleventh book in Armstrong's Otherworld Series. You don't necessarily have to read all of the other books to appreciate the story, but past events were mentioned so it wouldn't hurt to read the entire series in order. This is a coming of age story about a young witch, Savannah, trying to prove herself as a young supernatural PI. Savannah takes on a case involving three murdered girls, and a rather strange town full of possible suspects. It doesn't take long to discover that this town is full of secrets. Savannah is an entertaining character to read. She is a bit full of herself, but for the most part knows her limits and knows when to ask for help. However, she does have a tendency to make snide remarks, which I found to be rather amusing. I would have liked a little more spell casting from the characters, but overall I enjoyed the book.
