Rage Against the Dying (Hardcover)

By Becky Masterman
$24.99
ISBN-13: 9780312622947
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Minotaur Books, 3/2013
Other Editions of this Title
Becky Masterman’s debut novel Rage Against the Dying is a hair raising mystery set right in our back yard.  Pushed into retirement, former FBI agent Brigid Quinn and her husband are starting to settle down in Tucson and live a quiet life.  Brigid has decided retirement isn’t so bad and is starting to rather like her quiet life , but then her past finds her.   Now she finds herself  involved with an old unsolved case that was rather gruesome and horrific.  A man has come forwarded claiming to have been the Route 66 killer that Brigid spent years searching for.  He evens tells the FBI that he knows where Brigid’s missing protegee has been taken and will help them find her.  Of course, the new FBI agent on the case believes the confession to be a fake, leaving it all up to Brigid to once and for all close this deadly case.

Materman’s writing style is compelling.  She weaves in and out of the past and present flawlessly, making the reader unable to put the book down.  She also uses multiple narrators to tell the story,  giving you a complete look at what is happening.  This book has a few graphic and intense moments that will both make you both cringe and keep reading to find out what happens.  I was utterly immersed in the story from the first paragraph and all the way through the book.  And of course, I loved that it took place in Tucson.  Somehow it just makes the story that much better when I know the setting.  Be sure to get Masterman’s novel, this is an author to start looking for.

The Boyfriend (Hardcover)

I am so lucky I received a copy of The Boyfriend by Thomas Perry before it was released.  I love this author and every book he has written, and this book was no exception. He will be joining us in our booth on Saturday March 9th at 10:00 AM at the Tucson Festival of Books, so be sure to stop down and get your autographed copy .

Jack Till is a former LAPD homicide detective who now works as a private investigator. When the parents of a murdered young woman hire him, his investigation takes a turn no one saw coming.  The woman was a high paid prostitute and she is not the only victim.  As Till’s digging into the victims progresses he discovers a disturbing pattern.

I don’t want to give too much away about the plot so I will tell you how much I like the characters of Jack Till and his daughter.  Perry created such a terrific father daughter relationship and it really let you see a softer side of Jack.   It was so fascinating to watch The Boyfriend in action as the novel progresses and he realizes there is someone tracking him. The way Perry writes what the character is thinking and feeling is great.  You feel like you are right inside their head and a part of all of the action.

The Jane Whitefield series is one of my all-time favorites. This new character is great and if Jack Till continues in more books, I will still be one happy camper.  Mr Perry is an award winning author for a very good reason. (Tricia)

Deadly Stakes (Hardcover)

By J.A. Jance
$25.99
ISBN-13: 9781451628685
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Touchstone, 2/2013
Other Editions of this Title
Deadly Stakes by JA Jance is the eighth installment in the Ali Reynolds series and it is an engrossing mystery.  Ali has been asked to help unofficially investigate a ghastly murder and help clear the name of an innocent woman.  While working on this case, Ali finds herself intrigued by another case.  A teen boy has discovered a dying woman in the desert while he is retrieving a hidden box buried by his absent father.  Her gut is telling her that the two cases are connected somehow, she just has to keep digging and find the murderer before he strikes again.
Jance did such an amazing job of juxtaposing multiple points of views in her mystery    You are really able to relate to all of the characters, not just Ali, and you get a sense of their outlook on the murders.  This added depth to side characters who might not be given as much attention by another author and created a more compelling read.   Jance always does a great job of continuing the growth of Ali.  You really feel like Ali is a flesh and blood person who has had to battle personal relationships, job changes, and is learning where she fits in.  I also love that she keeps bring back characters from past books and creating a whole community of people that I want to read about.  Needless to say, this is another great read by Jance.  (Tricia)
JA Jance will be signing with Mostly Books on Saturday, February 9th at 5 PM, be sure to pre-order your copy now!  (Deadly Stakes will be out on February 5th)

The Art Forger (Hardcover)

By Barbara Shapiro, B. A. Shapiro
$23.95
ISBN-13: 9781616201326
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 10/2012
Other Editions of this Title
B. A. Shapiro’s debut novel The Art Forger  is a compelling tale of art heist and forgers.  Claire Roth has decided to do the unthinkable and forge a Degas for someone.  However, when the masterpiece is brought to her she starts to question the authenticity of the painting, which had been hanging in a museum for a century.  Now the quest for the truth begins.

This book is perfect for a cozy mystery reader; it has all the fun of a mystery without the blood and guts.  Shapiro does such a great job detailing all of the ins and out that are involved when forging art. I had no idea that much of the decision of declaring a piece of art a forgery is based on opinion.  Yes, there are tests that can be run to determine dates, but often people are making forgeries at the same time as the artist.  It was also fascinating to learn about Isabella Stewart Gardner’s museum and the historical thefts that took place there.  I really enjoyed how Shapiro captured Isabella’s voice and loved that she wrote a portion of this character through letters.  It just added a whole new layer to the character and made the story more fun to read.  Be sure to read this novel soon because Shapiro will be attending the Tucson Festival of Books March 9th and 10th.

Notorious Nineteen: A Stephanie Plum Novel (Hardcover)

By Janet Evanovich
$28.00
ISBN-13: 9780345527745
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Bantam, 11/2012
Other Editions of this Title
I love this series. It’s witty, funny and I just can’t imagine all the circumstances that Stephanie Plum gets into being a bounty hunter. Evanovich does a great job of keeping the story interesting and at the same time keeping the familiar. Yes, we know that one or more of Stephanie’s cars will blow up or catch fire. We know that she and Lula will get into some sort of not-right-with-the-law predicament. Grandma will cause issues at a funeral. This is what we expect, and love, in an Evanovich novel.

We also know that she will not settle for either of the two men in her life: Joe Morelli, one of Trenton’s finest cops, or Ranger, one of Trenton’s finest. Frankly, I think she has the best of both worlds with them and maybe she shouldn’t choose.
In this book, Stephanie has to find Geoffrey Cubbin who had been arrested after embezzling five million dollars from the residents in the retirement home where he worked. Grandma helps by going undercover…and insanity ensues.

You will enjoy this book for relaxing, light entertainment and laughing out loud at all the dysfunctional situations. I did.

Frozen Heat (Hardcover)

By Richard Castle
$26.99
ISBN-13: 9781401324445
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Hyperion, 9/2012
Other Editions of this Title
Richard Castle is a mystery author.   So needless to say, I get really excited every September when a new Richard Castle novel comes out, and this year’s was  Frozen Heat.  Just to clear up any confusion, no Richard Castle is not an actual person but a fictional character from the TV series that the ABC studio uses as a pen name.  The books are written as if the fictional Richard Castle wrote them, so the stories are similar to the TV show.    In Frozen Heat, Nikki and Jameson’s relationship takes an interesting turn when her murdered mother’s college friend is murdered and there is a connection between the two crimes.

One of my favorite things about reading and watching the show is to see the progression of the TV relationships and the book relationships.  As a bookstore owner,  I have also been intrigued with how the TV show builds hype for the book.  It has also been interesting to see how Castle’s mind interprets his  relationship with Detective Kate Beckett as you read the book.  Although, it does get a bit crazy if you read the book and watch the TV series at the same time – the book reads exactly like an episode.  Castle’s books continue to be witty and funny as well as suspenseful.  This is a must have for any Castle fan.

Watching the Dark: An Inspector Banks Novel (Hardcover)

By Peter Robinson
$25.99
ISBN-13: 9780062004802
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: William Morrow, 1/2013
Other Editions of this Title
Peter Robinson’s new book Watching The Dark was fabulous. I have loved inspector Banks since the first book and have enjoyed his evolution throughout the years.  Detective Inspector Bill Reid is murdered at the St Peter’s Police Treatment Center, thus  creating a sensitive case for Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks.  To make things even more challenging an Inspector from Professional Standards is assigned to the case to keep an eye on Bank’s investigation.  As he continues to look into the officer’s death, he realizes this case is linked to a cold case involving the disappearance of an English girl in Estonia.  Meanwhile, his college Detective Inspector Annie Cabot uncovers a labor scam involving corrupt bureaucrats that is somehow linked to Bank’s case.

As previously mentioned, this was fabulous.  I loved all of the police procedures and the details of opening an old case.  It was interesting to read a story that highlights the choices a young cop makes and how that effects his life years later.  I also really liked all of the different cultures in this story.  I learned so much about Estonia.  I was completely immersed in this book and couldn’t put it down till the very end.  This is an excellent British mystery series.  If you are looking for other series similar to Robinson’s style, try a Deborah Crombie or Stuart MacBride mystery novel.  (Tricia)

This book will be released January 8th 2013, be sure to pre-order your copy from mostlybooksaz.com today.

The Third Gate (Hardcover)

By Lincoln Child
$25.95
ISBN-13: 9780385531382
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Doubleday, 12/2011

Lincoln Child is just a fantastic writer. All of his books are so compelling and keep you guessing until the very last page. The action never stops and he adds so many layers to the story that you feel you are in a different world. The Third Gate takes place between Egypt and Sudan in the swamp, marsh, hell on earth as Child describes it.

Professor Jeremy Logan is an enigmalogist. He investigates strange occurrences while teaching at Yale. This time he is asked to help on an exploration beneath the Sudd where accidents, unusual sightings, and disappearances are taking place at an alarming rate.  Once he arrives, the problems escalate.  There is a pharaoh’s curse on the dig, near death experiences, and Jeremy continues to feel the evil that lives deep within the swamp.
If you like adventure, mystery, paranormal or just great writing, this is the book for you.

Explosive Eighteen: A Stephanie Plum Novel (Hardcover)

By Janet Evanovich
$28.00
ISBN-13: 9780345527714
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Bantam, 11/2011

Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich  is another delightful chapter in the life of Stephanie Plum.  Stephanie’s vacation turned out to be horrible.  Instead of having a relaxing time in Hawaii, Stephanie ended up flying home alone with a killer hunting her down.  Once back in New Jersey she finds out that her headquarters (or the school bus that is functioning as their temporary office)  has burned down and Lulu has fallen in love.  Things never seem to go smoothly for Stephanie, it always seems to get complicated.

Evanovich has such a talent for creating funny yet intense mysteries.  She also knows how to keep her readers guessing on where Stephanie’s heart lies, with Ranger or Morelli.  Needless to say, it is easy to get excited for the next book in the series because we always want more.  The good news is, we don’t have to wait much longer for Notorious Nineteen which comes out November 20th.  Pre-orders are on sale for 25% off so be sure to stop in the store or order online from us at mostlybooksaz.com.

Gone Girl (Hardcover)

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is an enthralling thriller that will grab your attention on the first page and will keep you reading until the very end.  Nick and Amy are planning to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary, until Amy mysteriously disappears and Nick becomes the prime suspect.  Nick refuses to be bullied into a confession and continues to claim his innocence and now everyone is wondering what happened to Amy.

What an intense read.  Flynn created such a phenomenal psychological thriller that it kept me completely engrossed.  Her characters are intelligent and her writing depicts this perfectly. Flynn tells her tale  through both Nick and Amy’s voices and reading each character’s perspective kept me guessing as to what was really happening and how the story would end.  Gone Girl is a must read for this fall.

A Wanted Man: A Jack Reacher Novel (Hardcover)

By Lee Child
$28.00
ISBN-13: 9780385344333
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Delacorte Press, 9/2012
Other Editions of this Title

The latest Jack Reacher novel, A Wanted Man, is sure to please fans. Jack Reacher is trying to find a ride to Virginia and ends up in a car with two men and a very nervous woman.   Several miles behind them lies a dead body who looks to have been professionally killed.  It doesn't take long for the FBI to enter the scene and for Reacher to realize that he is knee deep in a murder conspiracy.

Wow!  Child has such gripping novels that I find myself unable to stop reading until the very last word.  He does an amazing job of putting you right into Reacher's head and showing you how he thinks.  Often Reacher is thinking about a statistic or probability but then he could also be thinking about the best way to disarm an opponent. I really enjoyed how Reacher is starting to ponder his own mortality.  I think this is the first time he has ever admitted that he might not survive and is actually aging.  We often forget that Reacher is really just a man and not immortal.  What a great thriller!

The Cold Dish: A Walt Longmire Mystery (Paperback)

By Craig Johnson
$15.00
ISBN-13: 9780143123170
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Penguin Books, 5/2012
Other Editions of this Title
Cold Dish by Craig Johnson is a fabulous beginning to an excellent series. Sheriff Walt Longmire is just starting to claw his way back from the black hole of grief, which means he is able to function in society but that is about the extend of his capabilities. After the brutal raping of a young girl, Longmire discovers that the assailants are being murdered. Now he has to determine who the culprit is, in a town that is already horrified and enraged by the initial crime. Johnson creates remarkable characters that are funny, clever, and well developed. He has such a wonderful writing style that you immediately feel an affinity for the characters. It is so easy to pick-up his books and instantly get sucked into the lives of the characters. I have also been liking his main character, Longmire. He has a dry, sarcastic humor that often leaves me chuckling. His progression from overcoming the trauma of his wife’s death to being able to go out into the world and reconnect with people has also be fascinating. Not only has Johnson created memorable characters, but his stories are gripping psychological thrillers that will leave you wondering who did it. Also, if you haven’t already, watch the TV show based on the books.

Second Perimeter is the second book featuring Joe DeMarco by Mike Lawson and what a riveting read. I was completely glued to the book. The Secretary of the Navy’s nephew believes he has uncovered coworkers committing fraud and wants his uncle to start an investigation. The Secretary is skeptical and decides to ask Joe’s boss to check things out before launching an official government investigation. Joe takes off to start his work and Emma decides to join him. Before long the two are knee deep in a much larger crime than fraud, and things are beginning to escalate when the criminals take a personal interest in Emma. This book is fully of suspense and surprises creating an edge of your seat read. Lawson did such a great job of keeping me guessing all the way to the end. He incorporates all kinds of details making the story totally realistic. I found myself completely absorbed by the information on the Navy and national security, not to mention the all of the intricate plot twists. If you need a new thriller novel, be sure to start the Joe DeMarco series.

The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection is the thirteenth book in the No. 1 Ladies Detective series by Alexander McCall Smith and it is just as entertaining as all of the previous books. Ramotswe has been having reoccurring dreams of a mysterious man. As haunting as this has been for Ramotswe, it becomes even stranger when the man appears in Botswana and is none other than Clovis Andersen, the famous author of The Principles of Private Detection. This is the guide that Ramotswe and Makutsi follow religiously, so meeting the man behind the book left the ladies close to speechless. With the help of Clovis, Ramotswe sets out to find the real reason as to why the beloved matron of the orphanage was dismissed. And of course life in Botswana is never quiet, with bad lawyers and house building mishaps to keep you thoroughly engaged in the story. McCall Smith does such an excellent job with his writing that it is easy to escape to Africa. It was exciting to finally meet Clovis after all of this time, and always entertaining to catch-up with our favorite characters from the past books. As always, the characters are charming and funny with just the perfect amount of suspense added to keep you turning the pages. And to make sure we are excited for book fourteen, Clovis decides to stay in Botswana, so maybe we will see more of him.

Mike Cooper’s newest novel Clawback is a riveting financial thriller. Silas has been hired to track down the murderer of several investment bankers. He soon teams up with a financial blogger looking for her first real break when things start to get interesting. His initial hunch of who-dun-it doesn’t seem right. Now he is beginning to wonder if it is an inside job. This was an intriguing read. Cooper’s character lives completely off the grid, and it was interesting to read how he manages to stay that way. Constantly paying in cash, having no permanent home, only having prepaid cells that can easily be tossed, made Silas a much more captivating character. It was also fascinating to learn about investment banking and how computers really control the trends of selling and buying. All and all making for a good read with an exciting conclusion.

Deborah Crombie’s latest novel, No Mark Upon Her, featuring Scotland Yard superintendent Duncan Kincaid is sure to leave readers on the edge of their seats. Kincaid is called in to help solve the mystery of a murdered girl found in the river. He soon learns that the girl was an Olympic contender and a police detective with the Met, all of which raises even more issues in this complicated case. This case will push Kincaid to his limits. His job is on the line, not to mention the reputation of Scotland Yard, and of course he is fighting to stay ahead of the murderer in order to stay alive. Crombie has done such a marvelous job with her characters’ development. I have thoroughly enjoyed the growth, and mistakes, of the characters over the entire series. Crombie is such a detailed writer. Her atmosphere makes it easy to picture yourself in England and helps pull you even further into the mystery. She has such a nice balance with her writing to make the book realistic while still censuring out of few of the more grotesque details. This novel was filled with suspense, and is so well written that it will leave you feeling satisfied.

I had so much fun reading Mike Lawson’s thriller novel The Inside Ring. This is the first book featuring attorney Joe DeMarco and Emma, and what a great start to the series. DeMarco is out minding his own business when a strange woman jumps into the back of his car telling him he has ten seconds to drive away before the men kill them. Thus begins his odd relationship with Emma, the maybe government spy. DeMarco is never really sure who Emma is and what her job might be, but he knows she is always willing to help him in any way that she can; leaving the pair in a unique position of quietly helping each other out with their respective cases. In this first novel, DeMarco has to help uncover how the secret service may have been compromised. There has been an assassination attempt on the president and an anonymous insinuation that the secret service is involved. DeMarco is tasked to find out the truth without involving the FBI or the secret service. I loved how Lawson incorporates humor into his action novel. It never felt too serious even though the story-line was dealing with life-threatening situations. Lawson also did a great job of developing his characters and their relationships with each other. Emma and DeMarco are such an engaging pair to read, and I can’t wait to see how their relationship continues to develop through the series. Lawson has done such a fabulous job with his writing. It was easy to visualize Washington DC and all of the adventures that the two characters find themselves in. If you are looking for a new thriller novel or just want to try a new author, this would be a excellent choice.

Wow! Thomas Perry sure didn’t disappoint his readers with his newest novel Poison Flower. This is the latest in the Jane Whitefield series, and perhaps the most intense. Jane has been kidnapped by some nasty men and they have no problem doing whatever it takes to get Jane to confess where her latest client is. Of course, Jane would rather die than reveal the where-abouts of someone she has helped escape. Soon her kidnappers decided to sell her to the highest bidder, and wouldn’t you know all of the worst-of-the-worst from previous books are there to purchase Jane. This book had moments where I held my breath until I was able to get through to finding out how Jane was doing. Perry always does a great job with his descriptions and details. It is easy to get swept up into his books, even when they are scary. I also love his character Jane. Now that we are seven books in, I really feel like I know Jane. She has become so well developed over the series and I loved learning about her heritage. If you haven’t read this series you must. It has excitement, a great plot, and as I have previously mentioned a fabulous main character. This book will be in-stores March 6th 2012.

If you are looking for a great thriller novel to read that will also relate to the Tucson Festival of Books 2012, then grab The Second Opinion by Michael Palmer. Thea’s father has been a victim of a hit-and-run accident and now lies in a coma. Two of her siblings are pushing to end treatment, but Thea refuses to give-up on her father. Something just doesn’t sit right with her and before long she feels like her fathers accident was really something more sinister and deliberate. Palmer is a medical doctor and it definitely shines through his writing with detail descriptions of hospital life. What I really liked about this specific thriller novel is his character Thea who is a well respected doctor with Aspergers. Palmer really delves into her mind and shows the reader how people with Aspergers perceive the world and think. He not only describes her daily life, but also discusses how Thea was able to get through medical school and the therapies she underwent in order to become successful. It was an incredible eye-opening look into both Aspergers and hospitals that really added a nice dimension to the intense action laced plot of business conspiracy, espionage, and an extreme adventure novel.

We have said this before, Donna Leon’s novels are terrific and Death and Judgement was no exception. Someone is killing the businessmen of Venice, and Vice-commissario Guido Brunetti has to find the murderer. What I loved about this novel was that Brunetti was working on four different murders throughout several months. It made the story seem more realistic since Brunetti didn’t find the murderer within a few days, but really had to buckle down and piece every detail together. Luckily he had a little help with this one. Brunetti started to discuss the cases with his wife, and before long she made a connection that linked all four together. Leon examined how a Vice-commissario’s, or detective’s, family plays into the investigation. She specifically focuses on Brunetti’s daughter and wife. This bit of family drama and family values added just another wonderful layer to the story. As always, Leon’s characters are so well refined that it is easy to imagine them as real people. She shows the good sides, as well as the bad sides of the character’s personality, making them become a complete person. And it wouldn’t be an amazing read without the atmosphere of Venice that Leon creates in her novels. It is so easy to get whisked off to Italy and submerged into the mystery with her writing. If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading her books, do it today.

Like any normal non-CIA agent, Gideon attempts to inform the officials of his information, but has no success in convincing them to take it or him seriously. The only thing left to do is to find the terrorist himself and take them down before something tragic happens. This book was excellent! It was filled with excitement and adventure that kept me cruising through till the end. The story gives you a taste of life at the capital building, as well as all of the different divisions of security agencies that work simultaneously in our country. Gordon has created great characters that are easy to root for and a plot that is sure to keep your attention.

As unhappy about this decision as Melanie is, she decides to stop dwelling on Adam and face her problems with Finn and his corrupt family. As if the constant threat of being attacked by her co-worker isn’t enough of a problem, Melanie reunites with her college sweetheart who just so happens to be newly divorced. Now life has really gotten hectic. This was such a fun read. All of our favorite characters are back as well as a few new ones, keeping us laughing and wondering what will happen next. Mathis hit a great balance between the excitement of the spy life as well as the complications of a personal life. I loved being whisked around the world for an adventure for one day and then dropped back into the real world of family dinners the next. All and all, this was a great follow up to Living Lies and I can’t wait to see what Mathis has in store for us next. Stop in the store for an autographed copy.

Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon is a terrific intellectual mystery. This is the first novel featuring Guido Brunetti and what an excellent start to a great series. Vice-commissario Guido Brunetti has been called in to discover who poisoned the world re-known conductor Maestro Helmut Wellauer during a performance intermission. Of course the concert was packed with socialites and musicians, creating a very large pool of suspects to investigate. Leon writes fascinating mysteries that are filled with suspense and one amazing detective. Her novels don’t focus so much on the non-stop action, but instead explore all of the deductive reasoning and mental work that is needed to uncover who-dun-it. Leon creates such real characters who are continually developing and growing as the series progresses, (yes this is a series that you need to read in order). The novels are filled with Venice life and culture. In fact, Venice is almost it’s own character, with its own unique personality and flavor. If you are looking for a good detective mystery this would be the series to read.

Richard Castle’s latest novel Heat Rises is a roller-coaster ride of a who-dun-it that is sure to leave you wanting more. Nikki Heat is trying to solve the brutal murder of a priest, but is continuously running into problems from her captain. To make things even more stressful, Rook has been out of town for a month and suddenly turns up on the front page of the newspaper broadcasting his return to everyone, except her. And just to make things a bit more interesting, is all of the attention she is getting from all the higher ups due to her outstanding test scores. Things just seem to keep spiraling away from Nikki and she really has to push through and not let her emotions take over in order to solve this case. This novel is more somber than the past two. Heat and Rook have come to a point in their relationship where more conflicts are arising and their playful side, while still there, is less apparent. The tension within Heat’s department adds to the more serious tone. It is hard to be lighthearted and witty when you know there is a dirty cop somewhere out there. That being said, this book was filled with action and a fun twisty plot that kept me guessing who the murderer was and how all the little pieces fit together. It was very hard to put the book down once the non-stop action started. This is a must read for any Castle fan.

Mitchell Scott Lewis’s newest book Murder in the 11th House: A Starlight Detective Agency Mystery was a really good read. David Lowell has to solve the murder of a state judge by using his astrological charts and his knowledge. Join Lowell as he meets amusing characters and pushes his way through all of the misdirections of his case to find out who the true murderer is. I throughly enjoyed the characters, the story and the setting. The entire astrological aspect was great. Bringing in characters’ charts as well as charts for the murder, etc was highly entertaining and informative. I read a lot of mysteries, expecially ones where I can learn something while being involved with a good whodunit. I hope he continues with this series.

Alice LaPlante’s debut novel Turn of Mind is incredible. This is the story of Dr. Jennifer White’s descent in to Alzheimers and the murder of her friend and neighbor, Amanda. Jennifer is starting to have trouble recognizing her friends and family. She finds herself easily slipping into the past, and just as easily slipping into a present that makes no sense. Now she is the prime suspect for Amanda’s murder, but no one is able to figure out if she did it due to her failing memory. This book is written from Jennifer’s perspective as well as from her journal entries. It was fascinating to learn the story in this method and so well executed. The police’s attempt to uncover the murderer was such an intriguing aspect of the novel, as were the dynamics between the characters. The timeline does jump around a bit to highlight the effects of Alzhiemers, but was in no way confusing. LaPlante has done such an excellent job with this novel that it is hard to believe it is her first. We can’t wait to see what she writes next.

This series does have some paranormal aspects, but really just a touch here and there. If I am craving a mystery, this is always the series I turn to first. I love the homey feel that Galenorn creates in her stories as well as the mystery that takes me all around her small town, and at times Washington. Legend of the Jade Dragon is the second book in the series. It seems like Emerald has had nothing but bad luck after she witnesses a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a mysterious customer who gave her a jade dragon statue. The Devil Colony by James Rollins was great! I have loved all of Rollins's books, and this one was no exception. This is the latest novel in the Sigma Six series (it helps to read them in order but isn't necessary), and right from the first page, the action never stops. Moving from Washington DC to Iceland to Tennessee, the characters are on the move and always in danger. Rollins does a fabulous job of weaving the history we all know with little known facts to create a nonstop thriller. Agent X by Noah Boyd is the second book featuring ex-FBI agent Steve Vail. This one really lets you dive into the characters’ lives and learn more about their past and overall personality. Vail was suppose to be done with the FBI. He found he couldn’t work in the confines of the Bureau and instead turn to brick-laying as a career. He was called back to help the FBI on one case in the past, but that was all it was to be. However, it seems the FBI need his unique talents once again. This time an officer from the Russian embassy, called Calculus, claims to have a list of American’s who are selling confidential information and all of the clues are leading to an Agent X. Vail has to quickly decipher all of the codes that Calculus gives him in order to uncover the mystery agent. Boyd once again fills his book with action and suspense making you rapidly turn the pages. This book was also incredible enjoyable since it brings back the old Cold War feel and has several branches of the government working together. It was also fun to read about all of the technology that the agents would use to track down the mystery man. This was a great follow up to Bricklayer, and we would even go so far as to say it was even better.

Ridley Pearson always does a good job. David Hayes is not a nice person, he plays around with married women, then comes back years later when his crimes catch up to him, using blackmail. Not surprisingly, he winds up missing. The detective, Lou Boldt is a continuing protagonist we’re familiar with and learning more about him personally while he struggles to solve the crime is a plus. He and his wife become more real as we go along for the emotional ride. The wife is in banking so we get a little of computer banking information as well. This is a lovely change from the never-ending lawyer books. (Why does every lawyer think they should write)?

It is with great regret I write this review, this author has been one of my favorites writing about Martha’s Vineyard through the eyes of our hero, J.W. Jackson, gentle solver of mysteries through the people that wash up on the shores of the island. He’s a cook, fisherman and seems to know a great many interesting folks. I will miss him greatly. The occasional recipes have been a bonus feature (and great recipes, too). This one solves two mysteries, both due to J.W.’s loyalty to his friends. I always thought the character was based on the author, at the very least attributed the love of the Vineyard to him. The end of a lovely series, if you haven’t read them, start with any one of the titles with Vineyard in them, they stand alone exceptionally well.

The Bricklayer by Noah Boyd is a great thriller read. Steve Vail was fired from the FBI and moved on to an average career of laying bricks. However, it doesn’t take long before the FBI gets stumped on a serious terrorist case. No matter what technology they use, the agents are unable solve the complicated riddles that the blackmailer sends them. Soon, the FBI realizes that they must called in the one man who was known for looking at things differently and solving cases. Vail joins the team and sets off on a suspenseful journey of tracking down the terrorist. The best part about this book is when you and the FBI agents think the case has been solved something else happens and Vail shows you how wrong you are. The pieces of the puzzle have to constantly be viewed differently then you would expect. Needless to say, Boyd keeps you on your toes for the whole novel. This book is incredible well written and if you are looking for another Jack Reacher type character this is a perfect choice.

This series is an absolute delight - written in a very down home fashion that makes you feel a part of the family. And what a family it is! There is always something going on with the kids; babies, marriages, and life in general. But the two main characters are sisters in Alabama, so different that they are like day and night. Patricia Anne is the "normal" happily married sensible one; Mary Alice the outrageous many married part of the duo. They keep happening on dead bodies. Along the way we get slice of life in the south. The resulting comedy of errors and eventual solutions are totally fun to read. Escape at it's very best.

The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown is filled with historical detail, symbolism, and fun tidbits. This is a follow up thriller novel to The Da Vinci Code featuring Robert Langdon and all of his symbologist wisdom. Robert is frantically chasing clues around Washington D. C. in order to find his missing mentor. My co-work absolutely loved all of the information that Brown includes in his novel. She was especially please with his wonderful descriptions and details about the Library of Congress and the plethora of books contained within; the book retrieval system is fascinating to learn about. Brown also includes great symbolism and history in regards to the Washington Monument as well as other monuments located around the city. Needless to say, the realism and detail that is found in the novel was my co-workers favorite part of the book. However, there is still plenty of action to keep you turning the page throughout the novel.

Susan Cummins Miller’s newest novel Fracture is sure to have you glued to the pages. This is her latest book featuring geologist Frankie MacFarlane. Frankie and Philo have planned a nice, quiet vacation where they can just escape everything. That is until Philo’s aunt is murdered and all eyes turn to the husband Derek Dain as the prime suspect. Soon the duo find out that Dain’s highly valuable coin collection is missing, and the quest begins. Frankie and Philo travel all over Tucson and soon end up in San Francisco, California with even more of Philo’s family secrets being discovered. This is another great read by Miller. The characters are fun to read and the suspense is sure to have you staying up late into the night. The Return of Ixtab (Paperback)

If you are looking for a good mystery with a little science fiction in the background, give The Return of Ixtab by Robert Zitella a try. This book will be out in February (in paperback), but we were lucky enough to get to read it in advance. It is getting close to 2012 and most people seem unconcerned with the Mayan’s prediction of doom. Even Steve seems relaxed with the end of the world rapidly approaching. Well, at least he was feeling fine until his girlfriend becomes a target for an assassination. The more he tries to understand why someone would want to kill his girlfriend, the more he realizes that he is some how linked to an unstable tech billionaire. While all of this is happening, Zitella has added a parallel story line about a warrior-prince trying to uncover the mysteries of the glowing rock and another clan’s magic ability. Both stories are connected to the Mayan prophecy and are headed to an exciting end. What was fun about this story is that you don’t really know much about the warrior-prince’s culture or even which civilization is being portrayed until the end. It is clear that the mystery culture has stories about the end of the world as well as the modern civilization, so you know that the 2012 prophecy plays in some how. This books is incredibly compelling right up to the end since Zitella doesn’t give his readers any dull moments. The two story lines are very well done. As a reader you have no problem switching between times and stories. Overall, Zitella does a fabulous job creating an interesting, well written mystery novel.

State of the Onion by Julie Hyzy is an entertaining cozy mystery. Olivia is working hard to reach her goal of becoming the executive chef at the White House, but when she is the only one able to stop an intruder she finds her goals are quickly changing. Olivia soon starts an investigation to find and bring down the assassin who threatened the President. This book was a treat to read. The story was fun, fast-paced and well written. It was also set in a unique setting; the White House kitchen is not your typical sleuth mystery location. There are also fun recipes included for you culinary enjoyment. Overall, a great way to spend the day.

Ghost of a Chance by Yasmine Galenorn is the first book in the Chintz'n China mystery series. The series is about Emerald O' Brien who is not only the town witch, but also the owner of Chintz'n China Tea Room. For the most part, Emerald is your typical divorcee with two kids, but occasionally she does encounter the supernatural world. This time a ghost appears at the foot of her bed telling Emerald that she was murdered by her husband and no one knows; so begins the search for the murderer. This was a fun mystery to read that was pack with action and suspense, especially at the end of the book. I found myself frantically turning the pages to find out how Emerald was going to bring the bad guy down. In typical Galenorn style, the main character is sarcastic and witty but always ready to help out a person, or ghost, in need. I found this to be an entertaining read and am looking forward to the rest of the series.

Grave Secret is the final chapter in the Harper Connelly series. Harper and Tolliver head to Texas to attempt to patch things up with their little sisters. While they are visiting their family, Tolliver learns that his father has been released from jail and is trying to reconnect with his family. Naturally, this makes things tense for both Harper and Tolliver. Now the two must face their past and find out once and for all what really happened to their missing sister. This was an exciting conclusion to the series and a satisfying end. (I still get a kick out of Harper.)

Ice Cold Grave is the third book in the Harper Connelly series. In this one, Harper is tracking down a serial killer. Harris takes her series to the darker side of mysteries and the fun sarcastic Harper becomes much more somber. Harper and Tolliver also have to work through a few issues together, so their typical witty banter is put on hold for a while. However, I still really enjoyed this book even with out all of the humor. The characters started to show a different dimension and it is a great addition to the series.

I recently just finished reading Daniel Suarez's thriller novel Daemon. It was a crazy ride from start to finish. The story is about the death of a legendary computer game designer, Matthew Sobol, and the computer program he creates called The Daemon. The majority of Sobol's computer games were meant to be played online with other players, and often had a realistic and complicated story that other designers were unable to match. Before he died, Sobol decided to create a program that would "recruit, kill, and corrupt" as many people as possible. In fact, it is just amazing to find out what Sobel anticipated from law enforcement and the government, and the measures he took to prevent his program's destruction. The story may sound like science fiction, but I would consider this more of technology thriller. Once you start to read the story, the idea of a computer taking over and corrupting people seems less "out there" and more possible. I have to say this is not a novel that I would typically read; I tend to avoid technology related stories, but I really liked this one. It was very action-packed, and the story was filled with twists and turns. Once you finish Daemon, you will quickly have to grab Suarez's newest novel Freedom to find out the exciting conclusion.

It should come as no surprise that I had to rush into the store and get a copy of Stieg Larsson's third novel to the Millennium series, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest. I have been frantically reading it all day, and loving it. Larsson doesn't waste any time getting you back into the story, it literally picks up five minutes after the second book. The third book seems to be focusing on getting Lisbeth out of her legal problems, and I don't think this will be an easy task to complete. It does seem that Blomkvist has a plan though, well at least he keeps telling people he has a plan. This book is also giving you more background information on the Swedish governmental and legal systems, which has been fascinating to read about. Their legal system works similar to the United States, but some of the differences make it much harder to prove corruption or even if a person is innocent. I don't think this book will be quite as action packed as The Girl Who Played With Fire, but I am sure Lisbeth will still manage to surprise us. All and all, I feel like this will wrap-up the trilogy nicely, and I can't wait to get back home to read. I have been instructed to call one of my co-workers the instant I have finished so we can discuss it, evidently waiting until tomorrow is too long of a wait.

Well, I am totally jealous that one of my co-workers beat me to reading Jennifer Lee Carrell's newest novel Haunt Me Still. I have been told that readers will not be disappointed with this novel. It is a wild ride, much like her last Shakespearean mystery. This story pick-ups with Kate and Ben a few months after their "Hamlet" adventure from Interred with Their Bones. Only this time, the mystery is centered around Shakespeare's play "Macbeth". Kate has been hired to direct the play "Macbeth" in Scotland, and it doesn't take long for the infamous Macbeth curse to start reeking havoc on everyone involved. People are reported missing and later found crazy, trenches are being filled with blood, and people are being murdered. Now, Kate and Ben must discover if there is indeed a play where Shakespeare included rituals and witchcraft before they are either murdered or arrested. I am so excited to read this one. My co-worker has been raving about how wonderful it is, and I did love Carrell's last Shakespearean mystery.

I am currently reading Interred With Their Bones by Jennifer Lee Carrell, and I have to say I am rather enjoying it. I am cruising through this book. It is a fast-pace plot that keeps me turning the pages to discover what happens next. I have been unable to set this book down, and am lucky I made it in to work today. I am also a sucker for stories where an "ordinary" person with one special skill set is handed a mystery to solve. It gives me the feeling that one day I too will be given a mystery to solve, and succeed. The story is about uncovering a Shakespearean mystery that dates back 400 years. Kate is given a mysterious box from an old friend, who is later murdered in similar fashion as Hamlet's father. This sets Kate off on a wild adventure to uncover a literary secret. However, Kate is not the only person attempting to solve the mystery, and the stakes are getting deadly.

If you haven’t read Child, start now. His books are compelling, thrilling and full of great characters. Terminal Freeze takes place at the top of the world at a rarely used U.S. base. A small group of scientists has the opportunity to study the effects of climate change on glaciers. Several days into the exploration of an ice cave at the base of the glacier, they find a creature encased in ice. The group sponsoring the expedition turns this into a media event by freezing the ice and showing it on live TV. Before that happens, disaster strikes and people begin to die. A shaman from the only settlement near the base has tried in vain to stop the exploration before things went awry and now must help stop the killing. From his website (and I could not agree more) “In this riveting new thriller, Lincoln Child weaves together a stunning Arctic landscape, a terrifying mythic creature, and a pervasive mood of chaos—and fear. With Terminal Freeze, Child demonstrates why he has become a major bestselling author, and why his novels electrify and enthrall so many.” Both his stand alone and his books written with coauthor Douglas Preston are a must read.

61 Hours is the latest installment in Lee Child's continuing saga of ex-military police officer Jack Reacher. After a curious series of events, Jack finds himself stranded in a very cold, very troubled Bolton, South Dakota. Armed with an apparent super-human resistance to frostbite, his unstoppable fists and scolding wit, the man known to many simply as Reacher battles the forces of Meth-crazed bikers and a dwarfish yet philosophical, cartel leader. Child keeps the reader engaged and the tension dialed up with a strategically placed countdown system that makes the reader feel as though setting down the book even for a moment will cause them to miss part of the action. Whether you are already a fan of the series, or looking for a good place to start, or just need an adventure packed afternoon this is the novel is sure to deliver.

I made the mistake of starting Cruel Intent before I went to bed - you got it, didn't get to sleep until the book was finished. Ali Reynolds, the ex-TV anchor who lost her job and started a blog, not going back to TV journalism; keeps getting caught up in murder. She has moved back to her home town of Sedona AZ and her contractor is accused of murdering his wife. Ali does everything she can NOT to get involved; to no avail. I love her restaurant owning parents (home-style cooking) especially her Mom, who solves every situation with cooking comfort foods. The story just flows beautifully. J.A. Jance and her characters just keep getting better and better, but this one is a don't miss.

Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris was such a fun read. Harper was struck by lightning as a teenager and can now locate, and tell you how a person died. She has decided to put this gift to a financial use, and goes around the country helping locate missing people and telling how the person died. Harper soon finds herself stuck in a small town in Arkansas where she has discovered two murdered teenagers, and for some reason she is a suspect. Things in this town keep getting crazier, and before long Harper's life is being threatened. Harper decides that the only way to get out of this alive, is to find out the town's dirty secrets. I loved how direct Harper is; she doesn't believe in being pushed around or being overly nice and it was so refreshing. I also found the sibling relationship to be a nice addition to the mystery. The two had a very sarcastic relationship, which was entertaining to read. If you have been reading Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels (which the HBO series True Blood is based on) and are looking for something else, give the Harper Connelly mysteries a try.

While on vacation I decided to read Grave Surprise by Charlaine Harris, and I have to say I feel a bit sorry for the people sitting around me at the airport, I just couldn't contain my laughter at some points. This is the second book in the Harper Connelly series, and I thought it was even better than the first. When Harper was a teenager she was struck by lighting, and one of the long term effects has been the ability to find dead bodies and tell you how they died. Harper is asked to come give a demonstration for a college class in Memphis, Tennessee. And wouldn't you know it, she finds a body that doesn't belong in the grave she is examining. Well, this immediately starts a murder investigation that Harper is determined to solve. The characters, as previously mentioned, are even more entertaining in this novel than in Grave Sight; Harris laid the foundation for the characters in her first book and was able to have a little more fun in the second one. I am anxious to see what the third book has in store. Harper and Tolliver's relationship is starting to change, and I am curious to see where Harris plans to take it. If you have been reading Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series (which the HBO series True Blood is based on) and are looking for something else to read, give here Harper Connelly series a try. They are as entertaining and witty as her paranormal series.

If you enjoy antiques and mysteries, then be sure to check out Deadly Appraisal by Jane K. Cleland. Josie is soon searching for a murderer when someone dies at the Black and Gold Gala that is being held at her auction house. My co-worker said this novel is Antique Roadshow meets a mystery, and it was fabulous. In fact she had to take home another Josie Prescott book as soon as she finished reading this one. Evidently, the reader is introduced to enough "red herring" characters to keep you guessing until the end. I always enjoy a mystery more when I don't know who the killer is. Cleland's writing is great and her characters are very likable, all and all adding up for a fun read.

This is a totally different writing matter than the gritty wilderness series about Joe Pickett. The lead couple has adopted a baby girl who is being taken away from them. In the attempt to keep the baby, we get into political wrongdoing, gangs and worse. This is not for the faint of heart; but is extremely well written and we are with the parents, particularly the father, every step of the way. Having read the full earlier series this was a surprise, but a welcome one. CJ Box doesn’t lose his touch just because we aren’t in the wilderness any more; he is equally at home with the city life and the suspense doesn’t quit. Now he is on my list no matter what he writes.

As you have probably gathered by now, I have several co-workers who are devouring all of Lee Child's books. One co-worker just finished reading Bad Luck and Trouble by Lee Child, and had nothing but wonderful things to say. I have been told that this is a fantastic addition to the series because Child finally gives you more background information on Reacher. In this book, Reacher has to find his missing elite military team members. Out of the eight team members, four are missing and one has been murdered. Reacher can't figure out how the best of the best are being capture and murdered. My co-worker enjoyed all of the unique ways that the characters would find to contact Reacher. Being a man with no phone or address, he can be somewhat difficult to get a hold of. Child takes you inside the darker side of human nature with his greedy and self-serving characters, and as always, keeps you turning the pages with the fast pace action. This novel is filled with suspense, leaving you wondering what will happen next.

I finally started reading the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, and honestly, I can't believe I waited this long. The first book in the series is One For the Money. Stephanie has been laid off and is forced to become a bounty hunter in order to pay her rent. Bounty hunting seem like a quick way to make some cash, but Stephanie soon realizes that it is harder than she originally thought. Now she has a crazed professional boxer after her, as well as someone else who is trying to kill her, and the only person who can help her is the one man she needs to bring in. Never fear, Stephanie leans a few things about bounty hunting and gets to accessorize as she goes. This novel is filled with wit and humor. Not to mention, all of the fun mid-1990's references (I really enjoyed her outfits). This book is a great way to spend an afternoon.

I have been reading Parker for many years and love his mysteries. I was looking through the authors that are coming to the Tucson Festival of Books and saw he was one of them. I was totally excited and looking forward to meeting him. I didn't realized that I had missed this book. Wow, I remembered why I enjoyed his books so much. He is great with the character development, story line and just enough creepy people to keep you guessing. If you have not read any of his books, this could be the one to start.
