Candice Millard’s gripping biography Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President is an astounding read.  This book documents the incredible life of President James Garfield.  He rose up from poverty to become a scholar, a Civil War hero, a congressman, and finally president.  Millard not only explores his life and assassination, but also the medical practices that occurred during that time period; all in all creating a fascinating read covering the late nineteen hundreds.

I loved how easy this book was to get into.  Millard did such a marvelous job of taking a dry subject and making it interesting.  There was so much knowledge included in the book, but I never felt bored or overwhelmed with the facts.  Instead, I found myself eager to get home to finish reading it.  I was also intrigued with Millard’s portrayal of  Garfield’s assassin.  She really attempted to show his perspective and reasoning as to why he attempted to murder the president, along with his descent into mental illness.  I was also astounded by the medical sanitation, or complete lack thereof, at the time and general medical practices overall.  Garfield’s death was not from the bullet lodged in him, but rather from the “medical care” he received.  Needless to say, we have come along ways from those days of germs and dirt. This is a great book to read this fall and already a bestseller.

She-Wolves: The Women Who Ruled England Before Elizabeth (Hardcover)

Helen Castor’s She-Wolves: The Women Who Ruled England Before Elizabeth is a great overview of some notorious historical women. The book starts with Matilda, daughter of Henry I, and works its way through history to Margaret of Anjou. Castor does a great job of giving a detailed look at each of the women even though the sections are just a snippet of their lives. The focus of the book is on the period of time when the women were trying to take control of their kingdom, or while they were ruling. I especially liked how Castor kept mentioning the previous person that was discussed in relation to the current, as well as how each one is related to the kings and queens of the past. It was also interesting to read how each queen ruled in comparison to their predecessors. I did find myself wanting more information on each of the women. However, I realize that the only way to make this book manageable was to only give a brief look at each person. Castor’s writing flows along quickly and keeps the reader engaged. Overall, this is a very well written historical book that is easy for a non-historian to enjoyed and makes for a great starting point on the history of English rulers. If you enjoy this book, try and Alison Weir as a follow up. Weir’s non-fiction books, as well as her novels, are incredible detailed and well researched.

The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl (Paperback)

By Timothy Egan
$14.95

Published: Mariner Books, 9/2006

The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl by Timothy Egan is a fascinating history read. Egan tells the tale of how people knew that growing wheat was a great way to earn money, causing many people to migrate to the plains in order to plow up the land for farming. Once the Great Depression hit, a large majority of people packed-up and stopped farming, leaving dirt. Thus the dust bowls began. This is the story of the people who decided to stay in the High Plains and attempt to live even with the devastating destruction of the dust storms. Filled with real life stories, facts, and pictures, making this an excellent non-fiction read. If you are still craving more tales centered around dust bowls you can always read, or reread, the classic book The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

Out of the Flames: The Remarkable Story of a Fearless Scholar, a Fatal Heresy, and One of the Rarest Books in the World (Paperback)

$15.95

Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Broadway Books, 9/2003

One of my all time favorite books about a book. One of the rarest books in the world. The first half tells about the writer of the book, his life, and how he was burned at the stake along with his books. The second half traces the three books that survived.
